toys: hanging something from the ceiling?

Have you ever hung anything from the ceiling for your cat to play with? How did it go? Is it still available? How is it going?
Have you ever hung anything from the ceiling substantial enough so that your cat could grab on to the thing and lift itself up from underneath?

Lorraine - 23 Feb 2005 16:35 GMT >Have you ever hung anything from the ceiling for your cat to play with? >How did it go? Is it still available? How is it going? Yes. We have a couple of feathery toys attached to round elastic string connected to the ceiling. We also have a tennis ball attached on the end of a string of elastic. Lucy likes them. She'll play by herself with them. She'll grab the toy in her mouth, take it up the nearby stairs stretching the elastic, and then let it go and attack it on the rebound. The attached toys get changed as Lucy tires of them. The toys are put up out of reach when Indie is allowed in the area because the game to her is to see how fast she can chew through the elastic. Ty shows little to no interest at all.
We're going to try making a fabric covering a couple of feet long for the elastic for Indie. We've only had them up since December. They're connected with just a thumbtack into the ceiling tile and have never come down on their own. They hang to about 2' from the floor.
>Have you ever hung anything from the ceiling substantial enough so that >your cat could grab on to the thing and lift itself up from underneath? No. Haven't tried this at all. Something to consider though. I think only Indie would be interested of our cats. She's our big climber.

Lorraine - 25 Feb 2005 11:30 GMT >Have you shopped for elastic materials? Do you know where to get >them? Sewing supplies? Yes, most likely any store that carries sewing supplies. I had some on hand, but also bought more at Hobby Lobby because I was there for other things also. If I were to buy, I thought I might go for elastic band instead of string. I don't know that it would make much difference though.

I just got back from a sewing area in a department store. They had various types.
I went to the baby area looking for something to put catnip in, ended up buying some baby bottle nipples to put on the end of the elastic/string. I figure it might be good for the cats to chew on. Something like that, leather, or whatever.

Signature Brandy??Alexandre? http://www.swydm.com/?refer=BrandyAlx Well, would you?
sarah - 23 Feb 2005 19:17 GMT All you need is a helium filled balloon on long'ish bit of string. Tie a cat toy to the string and watch the fun!
It might just be safer to remove it from the room when you're not there though.

Her new cat tree even came with a dangly toy, but I had to remove it because as soon as she noticed it, she went for the string and started chewing. No attention paid to the mousie on the end.
*sigh*

Must be rough having to take everything the way you buy it without being able to modify anything. But seriously, I guess it's good to know, I feel so capable.

I'm trying to figure out your angle, but I really can't, unless it's just "troll." I have better things to do in life than try to engineer a stringless dangly toy so that Oscar can play with it, if that's your point. She's perfectly happy with the cat tree and the four thousand toys she has that don't have a string attached. If your point is that it somehow causes me trauma that she eats string ... um, I have no idea what to say to that.
