Went to see him this morning.  He's on an IV.  He actually looks better I
guess from the fluids but now he's weaker - and he's not eating.  He ate a
few pieces of tuna and chunky chicken off my fingers but that was it.  He
wanted to eat but it seemed like it was too much of a bother.  My vet said
they did the IVP dye test and gave him a little more than half what the test
is supposed to be because it is a risky procedure and that his other kidney
is not very good - so he wouldn't be able to do the surgery - also that they
saw stones in his bladder but that the kidneys are the issue.  In other
words, he got a death sentence.  He said I can bring him home tomorrow - he
wanted him to be on the IV another whole day/night and then I'd have to make
a decision.  Needless to say, I've been hysterical.
My thoughts are to take him right from the vet, who is in Phila anyway, to
the Univ of Penna vet hospital and get a 2nd opinion.
If they concur, then, I will still be devastated but I'll know I did all I
could for my baby boy.  I am so heartbroken.  I don't know if I'm wrong in
putting him through anymore tests & things.  If I lose him, itll be three
cats in a little over 4 years.  My heart is just torn out.  :(   Carol

Thinking of you Carol. As everyone here has said to me...do what YOU
think is right.

Why does it have to hurt so bad?

If only I had the answer to that question. The attachment we feel to our
pets simply can not be put into words. Hang in there...

By the way, I found that a pint of Ben & Jerry's is good medicine.

My poor other cat, Randi, isn't eating well now. I know he's upset about
Elvis.
(Poor "little" Randi weighs in at about 18 lbs.)

Cats indeed form very close relationships with other cats and morn the loss
of a close companion - cat or human.  I have a few cats at the shelter that
I will only home as a pair.

I remember this very well. When we lost Fugazi her sister Isis behaved
in a very strange manner. At first she didn't seem too concerned about
it. Fugazi was an olympic deep sleeper and when she didn't show up at
the food bowl, Isis probably thought she was off snoozing
somewhere.....

The next day she started to worry, she went off her food (Probably the
only time she ever did. This is the cat who licked her food bowl clean
just before she crossed the bridge) and wondered about the flat
looking sorry for herself and visiting all the secret little
hideyholes Fugazi used and calling to her in a strange little voice
almost like a mom cat calling to a kitten.

The following day, we heard an almighty crash and ran into the
bedroom. Basically we used to keep a box of jumpers on top of our
wardrobe and this was Fugazi's favourite place, it was soft, warm,
high and above all Isis who was not a good climber could not plague
her up there. The crash was Isis who was determined to get to that
box! She made it with great effort and she trotted towards that box
with a grin on her face it was as if she was saying "Found you! You
gotta be here!"

When she reached the box her face fell, she let out a yowl that
sounded like she was crying and climbed down slowly (with help). She
was quiet for a few hours and then perked up again

And some people say "They're JUST animals"

What a sad story - and beautiful story.

I've seen shelter buddies look for each other after one has been homed.
Some cats become very depressed. Now, I will not split up two very close
cats.  Surprisingly, more people than you might think will adopt the pair
rather than split them up.

> And some people say "They're JUST animals"

You know what I have to say to those "some people", don't you?

> And some people don't have a choice in the matter. Once we decided to get a cat to live in our small flat we decided we could have only one. A friend of ours had two kittens so we went to pick our kitten.

After watching these balls of fur galloping about for ten minutes one
of them came to me and patted my leg, so I picked her up and she
started with the loudest purr I had ever heard, within five minutes
she was sitting on my chest, staring at me with her big adoring eyes
and I knew we had found OUR kitten so I turned to Dave....

While I was falling in love with OUR kitten, the other kitten was
strecthed out on Dave's lap, having her tummy tickled and purring like
crazy...

He opened his mouth about the same time I did, I knew what we were
both going to say "This is OUR kitten" but we wouldn't be talking
about the same kitten and no way was I going without the lap fungus
purring at me and vice versa.

What actually came out was:

Dave "It can't be much dearer to feed two of them"

Me: "They'd be company for each other if we're both out"

Yes we'd been conned, we had Fugazi and Isis.

Funny thing is Fugazi, the one who sat on my lap and stared adoringly
at me, once settled in her new home, never liked being picked up.

(I still reckon before we came in, Isis was saying "If we wanna stay
together I'll tackle one and you tackle the other one")

Usually the second word is "off"

My Luna doesn't even LIKE Jasper and I know she is worried. You can just
tell.

Like the old saying, or was that a song goes, Love Hurts. As far as whether
or not to put the cat thru any more tests, that's a decision *you* will have
to make. I've had to make the decision several times thru the years, never
an easy one. You just have to decide what is best for your pet. I feel your
pain.

I've always felt that it is the price of loving so much. It would be worse
to never know that part I think, although sometimes you do wonder. I'm so
sorry :(

Carol, I would have to get the second opinon from expert nephroligists at U
of P.  I'd have to know beyond any doubt that he did not have a chance.  I
made the mistake once many years ago and realized I made a mistake when I
read the necropsy report.  That mistake still haunts me to this day.  That's
why now I must know the cat didn't have any chance. That's just me, but I'll
respect whichever decision you reach.

My very best wishes,

Phil

I feel I HAVE to go there and get their input.  I couldn't live with myself
if I didn't.
I will probably just take him into the ER there after I pick him up
tomorrow.
Their ER is open 24/7 and I don't know exactly what time I'll get there to
make a
regular appointment.
Thanks.

Your courage and dedication is awesome!  Elvis could not have a better
friend!

I would probably do the same too.  When Dash was ill, I took her to Tufts
University.  Even though it turned out there wasn't a whole lot they could
do either, I felt better knowing that at least I had input from experts.

Good luck.  I know this is an extremely difficult time for you.

Yes, go to UPenn.  It may certainly be an option--I've been there many
times.  Good luck to you and Elvis.

They are very comprehensive, caring, and not cheap.  But they averaged out
cheaper than my local vets every time.

I've had a dog there for epilepsy, a cat for thyroidectomy, a dog for spinal
disease, a cat for squamous cell of the jaw, a cat for amputation of a leg
(vaccine related carcinoma), a cat for mysterious weight loss and fever, and
most recently a cat for a mastectomy and chemo.  In all cases I was thrilled
with the care given.

My heart just goes out to you. I can't tell you how much I understand and
how sorry I am :(  Purrs for strength and comfort. I know it isn't much but
we do understand totally.

Carol,
I'm new to the board so I apologize for sending my hugs so late.  How is
Elvis? I have an Elvis, too who is going through chemo & radiation for
Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the top left jaw. I know you hurt. I find myself
crying quite often.

Thinking of you! You need a hug!
