Liver Cancer treatment

Well...I called the Animal Medical Center here in New York City..They were
recommended by my vet..Just wanted to ask a few questions, so of course
it's $150 for the initial consultation, and they don't answer questions
over the phone...

Here is report from sonogram:
Ultrasonographic Findings: There is a 1.5 cm hepatic mass in the center of
the liver. The gall bladder is normal. The cystic duct and common bile duct
are normal. Thespleen is normal. Renal size and architecture ar normal. The
adrenal glands are normal. The urinary bladder is normal. The stomach and
intestines are normal. The pancreas is normal. The meseneies are normal.
There is a mild to moderate amount of ascites.
Ultrasonographic Assesment: hepatic mass, ascites.
Recommendations: Check coagulation and do guided liver biopsy.

QUESTIONS are...
1. What would be most typical treatment for 1.5 cm lump in center of liver
if it turns out to be cancerous? Chemo, radiation..or both??

2. How much will all this cost?

3. If left untreated (cause it's inoperable) what will be the course of the
disease? Will Kitty be in extreme pain for many months? Vet told me that it
would take about 3 months for Kitty to pass away if tumor is
cancerous..They would "give her something" to make it less painful..Just
don't want a situation where she is lying in her bed, urinating on herself
because she is too weak to get up and use the litter box.

The coagulation results will be back tomorrow, Monday or Tuesday (cause of
the weekend)

Thanks for whatever help/advice/experience/opinions anyone has to offer....

Since there seems to be no evidence of metastasis - I'd have the damned
thing cut out in a heartbeat!  The feline liver has a fantastic ability to
regenerate and regenerate *rapidly*.  In fact, 75% of the feline liver can
be resected without significant clinical dysfunction.

I'd speak to a surgeon if I were you.

Good luck.

Phil is not a vet, but many of us who have had sick animals
have received better, more accurate and useful advice from him than from our
vets.

I see that you are posting through the catkb web site. Your posts are
reaching Usenet. I don't know about the
web site, but here if the person you want to reach is
posting with a valid email address you may reach them that way.

Thanks. I hope you find some of it helpful.

Your messages are comming through loud and clear to the entire group.  If

rec.pets.cats.health+behav through your ISP news server.

Also, I have a Yahoo group you'd might like to join:

I don't know if your went through an oncologist at the AMC, but if not,
that'd be my very next step, with all of the results given to him/her.
Would surgery - a lumpectomy - followed by chemo, or even the other way
around, be a possibility?

Cats, btw, tolerate chemo *way* better than humans.
