I have an old tabby (almost 19) who has had a small growth (pea sized)
under his chin for the past few years. The vet has seen it, but I
didn't want him to do any surgery on it. We took a watch and wait
approach. And, it didnt seem to bug him.
I noticed on Friday that the growth somehow looked larger, and thought
about making a vet appt soon. Well, the next day I walked into my
bedroom where my cat was sleeping, and noticed blood specs on my bed
and all over the wall behind the bed. A tiny amount of blood was on my
cat's back paw. He obviously went to scratch his chin, opened the
growth, and it drained..everywhere! I put some neosporin on the cat,
cleaned everything up and watched him carefully. It clotted quicky and
now, a few days later, looks to be almost gone! The cat is as happy as
ever.
I swear he is living all nine lives back to back.

Well, that's less scary than if there were gaps :-)
I often wonder how cats manage when they have no humans to look after them, and
here's an example of a surgeon-cat! If you find him putting an M.D.s board up
outside your house, you'll know he's a real miracle!
