 Hi All,

Can anyone tell me anything about the "Home Again Microchip".  I just
brought my act in to get neutered and they asked if I wanted them to do
this while they were doing the procedure.  I said ok.  Has anyone ever
used this before?  I guess the jist is that if my house cat ever gets
outside he can be tracked?

 Thanks for any feedback!

The purpose of the chip is to get your beloved baby back home if they
are ever lost. One of my babys had a lot of infection at the site so I
had to have it removed but most people don't have any problems with it.

Ok,  and I know I should have asked at the vet.  But..  Suppose my cat
gets out.  How do you get them back?  Is this like a Lo Jack for pets??

 Thank you for responding!!

yes, a vet or shelter would scan for the chip, it greatly increases the
chance of him getting home.
Thanks for being a responsible pet owner.

Not like a lojack.  It doesn't actually track the pet.  The chip has an ID
number.  If a shelter or vet has the right equipment, they can scan the pet
and see the number.  Then they call the registry service (in your case Home
Again) and get the owner information from them.  Then they call you and tell
you to pick up your cat.

You should have gotten some paperwork from your vet.  You should fill that out
and send it to the registry ASAP.  Without the registration info, the chip is
useless.  Also, if you or the other contacts you list move or change phone
numbers, you need to notify the registry.

All 4 of my indoor cats are chipped with Home Again chips as insurance
should they ever become lost.

Find out which scanner(s) your local animal control uses.  Some scanners
detect but can't read another manufacturer's chip.

Next year my husband and I will travel around the Eastern United States.  I
want to get the kitties microchipped before we go, but I'm hesitating
because I don't know what would be our best bet.  They both wear collars,
which I realize they could lose if the cats got lost.
I'd pose this question to the group:
What brand of microchip is most common and/or most likely to be read if the
cat got lost in your area?

In Chicago, they used Avid alot. Here in California, they seem to use
Home Again more. I'd call your municipal animal control and ask which
chips they can scan and use one of those.

I would recommend the AVID *Euro* chip because it can be read by AVID and
Destron (Home Again) scanners and I think a few others.   The AVID Secure
chip can be read only by AVID scanners.

I have a Destron Pocket Reader EX - which I think is the most universal
scanner and the one most commonly used - at least in the U.S. - and
recommended by the HSUS whose recommendation most shelters and animal
control agencies seem to follow.

To be on the safe side, I'd call the shelter in the county where you plan to
visit or the local animal control in the city or town.

Thanks, Phil.
We will not be in any one place long enough to contact the shelters.
In fact, we're not sure of where we will stop.  It will be that kind of
journey.
I think from what you said that the AVID Euro chip would be our best bet.
Now I have to find out if we can get it locally.
