CatKB.com? Alternative for AOL users?

Candace - 04 Feb 2005 03:24 GMT Hmmm, remember how some of us were discussing AOL dropping newsgroups? And what AOL users could do as an alternative? Of course, there's Google groups, from which I'm currently posting but I began noticing a few days ago people posting via CatKB.com and checked it out. Although, I'm currently posting from Google, CatKB.com looks like an easier way to read and post. Is it something new? As far as I can tell, it carries all of rpchb and rpca as well as a couple of others. So, maybe this is an option for those of us on AOL who, for whatever reason, are deciding to stay with AOL for the time being. It also seems to hide one's email address, which can be beneficial, I suppose.

Check out some of the posts from folks via CATKB. Especially in alt. cats. :) And if you do decide to use it, I know you will include a snippet of the text to which you are replying, so we will know who you are talking to.

I think it looks like a good alternative if you don't want to set up a regular news reader. It's been so long since I'd used AOL that I couldn't remember if it let you hit the net on an interface other than what they give you, I don't even know if you can configure a news reader. No one seems to be doing it, so maybe you can't. Tell me, can you open up Internet Explorer to browse the internet?

Candace - 04 Feb 2005 03:39 GMT Yes, I have IE in addition to AOL's browser so I generally use that as it's faster. One could also open AOL's browser, though, and go to any of those places. It's a regular browser, it just doesn't work as well as IE.

You could easily install a newsreader like Xnews, or use Outlook Express (not recommended) and configure news.individual.net news provider (or another, though individual.net is reliable and free).
I'm just really curious if this would work. No one seems to be willing to try.

It seems as though there was some mac related issue when I looked at it, I'll look again but it seems it wasn't compatible with the particular operating system I have. I'm not overly computer-savvy, I mean I know how to use a lot of different programs but this technical stuff isn't my forte.

I may be totally "off" - never having had AOL, but if you have IE installed, then can you use OE (even though some people hate it - but it doesn't bother me) as a newsreader, along with a news server such as individual.net - which is a freebie?

Actually, I have a mac at home and I don't have OE, I have something similar called Entourage (part of the mac MS Office Suite) but I don't use it. I guess I could try to figure it out...I never had any reason to do so...The news servers I looked at a couple of weks ago didn't seem to have mac versions.

Otherwise there are newsreaders for Mac that you can use, but everyone I have tried is a pain. I think I just got too used to OE. Besides, I like to be able to check email while newsgrouping.

The Mac users I know on other newsgroups use MacSoup or Thoth or Hogwasher as newsreaders. They are all shareware with trial periods, and I think there are a few freeware ones for the Mac at download.com
For a free account at news.individual.net, you would set them up with news.individual.net as the NNTP server, and the same SMTP (outgoing) mail server that you use for your regular email.

Do you know what the actual SMTP address for AOL is though? Like, is it smtp.aol.com, or mail.aol.com, or what? Their software would come preconfigured and who knows if you can even find it to enter it into another software package? I suppose one could always just C&P text from a news reader into AOLs email client to email someone personally... it'd be easier to keep it all in one place.

As far as a newsreader, I did try one but couldn't ever get it configured to work. There has to be one though that works with AOL. We have SBC Yahoo DSL at work. Now I should be able to use a newsreader with that, right? The whole newsreader thing is something new for me. ________ See my cats: http://community.webshots.com/album/56955940rWhxAe Raw Diet Info: http://www.holisticat.com/drjletter.html http://www.geocities.com/rawfeeders/ForCatsOnly.html Declawing Info: http://www.wholecatjournal.com/articles/claws.htm

Mike - 04 Feb 2005 16:57 GMT It is not moderated in the terms of Usenet when you send a message and need to wait till the administartor approves it. CatKB just removes spam.

Yes, Google is do-able and all but it's a bit cumbersome. I haven't posted from CatKB but it looks as though it would be easier and it also reads easier than Google, I think. Is it new? I only recently noticed people posting from there.
