Hi all,
We have a 10 months old cat. And we recently got a puppy. Their
introductions went well, and no hisses, growls, barking from any side.

They normally sniff each other and run after each other. Our cat is
10.6 lbs and puppy(shitzu mix) is just 4 lbs. Most of the time play
gets a bit too physical for the puppy and ends in a loud cry for help
from him. The cat pounces on the puppy and paws him and plays with the
mouth. The puppy doesn't seem to like it beyond a point.

We don't even know whether this is play or aggression from the cat. The
cat is mostly sleeping and doesn't care much about the puppy when it is
not in the mood.

Thanks,
Gats

Does your cat stop when the puppy yelps, or does she keep messing with him?

Have you gotten involved in these encounters, or do you just observe?

Every time it gets rough, the minute it gets rough, separate them and give
kitty a time out for about 15 min in the bedroom. They will learn what
"enough" is. My cats learned to wrestle in total silence and so did my moms
doing this. They know the minute it is "too hard" play ends, so they are
more careful.

Yes, we pick the kitty up and end the play.

But he doesn't seem to like that. And now the puppy has also started
growling at the cat. I don't knwo whether it is playful growling or
not.  BEcause as soon as he growls we end the play.

But the play seems rough to us anyways. Since it is our first
experience with cats and dogs, we are a lil apprehensive. The cat paws
the puppy a lot, and puppy tends to play with mouth! And we are always
on the edge on our seats!!!

Thanks,
Gats

Just try and get them apart the minute it gets to vocals of any kind and put
kitty in time out. If you do it consistantly, I bet they learn in 2 weeks or
less.

I honestly would worry more about the puppy than the cat, at this point.
Puppies do play with their mouths; after all, they don't use their paws the
way that cats do!  Think of a dog's mouth as its hands, because the mouth is
really the only thing it can use.  How else would you expect him to play?

That being said, he should learn to be gentle enough with his mouth that he
won't hurt you or your cat.

Unfortunately, while I've had both a cat and a dog, the situations were
reversed and the dog was much too old to consider playing with the cat.
Because of that, it's hard for me to give specific advice =/  Pet play can
certainly get awfully rough.  I'd certainly say to separate them if they're
injuring each other or the fur is flying, but it's hard for me to give advice
aside from that.

Have you asked your vet for advice?  The vet should be at least a little bit
familiar with both animals and might have some ideas.

When my cat and my Shih Tzu would play together, they would do a sort of
comical wrestling for a few minutes until one of them would lose interest.
Sometimes, when the cat would get a little bit to rough with the dog and she
would yelp, a loud clap of my hands and yelling STOP, would put an end to it,
and they would continue playing gently..

I'm wondering how things are going with your two....I have a very similar
problem.  Yesterday was only day one.

Thanks!
