Hi
Can anyone help or explain this?
I have 2 uneutered (through that is about to change) 21 month old
black queen sisters who are utterly adorable except for one thing.....
Sarrasine the smaller and shyer of the two (which is not saying much
as they are both very confident kittens), does not like to c**p in her
litter box but she does her business next to the box . She will do it
if picked up and placed in it when she crouches down or if we are
watching her but with the sort of look that suggests we are cruel for
"making" her do this. However for the other business, she will use the
box even if it needs cleaning. She and sister Redunzel came house
trained through as a kitten Sarrasine was the one with the occasional
"accident" whereas Redunzel has always been perfect. Sarrasine was
perfect eventually for a few months and then this started
They share a box. I have been advised to clean wherever Sarrasine goes
with something strong on the disinfectant front but I am worried that
an unpleasant smell so near the box will discourage both cats from
using it.
I have tried different brands of litter it doesn't change things.
Someone suggested a covered box might be a help any comments?
I'd just love to know why she does it

Add a box. Sometimes they like one for each.

Add onother one - or two - litter boxes, next to the first one. I had a cat
who did this, long ago (although other cirumstances were not the same);
giving her a choice of 3 litter boxes cleared up the problem.

As other posters have suggested, add at least one extra litterbox. Some cats
are very picky and won't use the same box for different jobs.

Mine absolutely refuse to go unless 'solids' from the other are cleaned
out first, although since fitting a cat flap the older male hasn't used
the litter tray except in emergencies (like when he's locked in).
But the female hasn't quite got the hang of taking a dump in the tray.
She manages fine with urine, digs a nice little hole, plonks her rear
in it and covers it up neatly when she's finished. But either her
mother didn't show her how to crap or she's forgotten. It can be quite
amusing to see the rigmarole she goes through - digs a hole, changes
her mind and goes for the other corner, changes her mind back again,
all while meowing as it's nearly 'touching air' as we like to say,
before ending up putting her head in the freshly dug hole in the litter
and pointing her behind up in the air!
Usually this is ok, as she ends up dumping on top of the pile of litter
she's dug up, but sometimes her rear ends up hanging over the edge of
the tray and the resulting little purl ends up on the floor!

Lesley, I highly recommend adding at least 1 additional box. Some cats like to
pee in one and poo in the other.
