Hi all, I am new here and wanted to get some feedback on whether other
cats are like the one I adopted from the humane society. All we knew
was that he was over 1 year old and was a stray. He is part persian,
but without the scrunched up face, he is orange and white, very fluffy
with pretty orange eyes. kind of looks like puss in boots from shrek 2.
He was pretty out of it the day we got him because he had just been
neutered and wasn't feeling too well. We soon found out we got the most
amazing cat. He plays hide and seek with us, anyone, even small
children. What we do is just walk up to him and hiss or say boo or
something and run off and hide somewhere. He will jump up and sneak
over to where you are and then stand up on his hind legs and "get" us
by grabbing us somewhere with his front paws, no claws at all, just
soft paws, and then run and hide. We then have to find him and do the
same thing. He loves this game. Sometimes he iniates it as well. i can
be walking into the living room and he will be hiding under a chair and
just reach out and grab me with his soft paws, like " haha! I got you!"

We also ju8st discovered today that he plays fetch! He has some soft
toy mice he LOVES and keeps hidden in an open heater vent and pulls
them out to play...it is his toy box lol. He brought the mouse over to
me, I threw it and he got it and brought it back to me. We did this
forever.

He is absolutely the most amazing cat and I have never been a cat
fancier, my daughter wanted a cat and we finally allowed her to get
one. Does anyone else have a cat that does these strange things? I'd
love to hear anything at all! Thanks!

Congrats on your great new cat. :) I've had several that teach
themself how to play fetch. Just like a dog does, dropping the toy
at my feet. I have one that has 4 squeaky mousie toys that she
lines up, is a bit OCD about it if she can't find them all. All but
the former feral love the laser pointer toy, even though they know
where the dot originates. :)

**Hi,

Sorry to piggy back here, but I somehow missed the original post.
I just have to say that my recently deceased boy, 'Blue', used to play 'hide
and seek' with me also. Blue was part Siamese, and part Himalayan, and he
was always very non-aggressive and extremely docile, not to mention
beautiful.

When Blue was a kitten, I used to run around in my back yard, sometimes
hiding behind a tree, and he would run up to me and find me. Sometimes I
would yell out "BOOOO!" right before I sensed he was 'on me',  therefore,
scaring him before he got me.  I'm sure my neighbors got a kick out of
watching this blond  woman running around playing games of 'hide and seek'
with her baby/ cat.

I was surprised when I discovered our 'hide and seek' game. It seemed so
rare because Blue quite obviously *knew* this was* a game (between us), and
he was truly delighted in/ by playing it with me.  I'd neeever in my life
seen this with a cat.

Sometimes I would run, and then hide behind my couch or a doorway and he
would immediately (sense Play-Time is Now On and) run up to find me. I'd
then pop out and say, "I GOTCHA!".  Wish I had a video tape of our silly and
funny play times together, but yet, I remember it all so very well, like it
was just yesterday in my mind. That's good enough for me.

I've tried playing the 'hide and seek' game with my new boy kitten,
'Dove'-(who also will play with his dry food, Blue never did, but that's
another* post) only when I do this, Dove seems frightened, like he's
thinking, "What in the heeck does this craaazy woman think she doing?! EKKK,
SCARY!". Dove  just doesn't seem to get, "This Is A Game, and Only a silly
game" :-).

Cheryl, The way you and Blue played is EXACTLY how our cat plays...he
knows it is a game and loves it. sometimes he even really scares me
because he moves so quick and if I am behind a doorway hiding and think
he is in the kitchen, i will peek out and there he is pouncing at me!
It is so weird to me that a cat will play human type games and enjoy
them so much. I am so happy we picked him for our family, he fits in
perfectly!

My cat Lucy (now at the RB) used to hide in the pots on top of my
kitchen cabinets and leap out at me when I walked by -- like a jumping
jack. I could swear she was slapping her thigh and laughing.

Well, he sounds just WONDERFUL!! Congratulations. It sounds like you got
just the cat you needed! My boy cat used to play fetch, although he doesn't
much anymore, but I probably fell out of the habit of doing it with him a
lot. I used to have a cat that I would hide from and he would come after me.
Couldn't stand it, and I would be somewhere where I could see him before he
saw me. I would jump out and say KABOO! and he'd JUMP in the air and run
away and I would chase him. He just loved this in all his younger years. We
always had a great time.

My kitten played hide and seek with my glasses once. I cannot see
anything without them, so I got to spend 30 minutes crawling around my
apartment looking for them!
I finally found them by his food dish.

He also enjoys playing fetch occasionally as well, but he doesn't always
bring what he is fetching back. Sometimes he will just drop it in one of
my shoes for some reason. *shrugs*

I find them in the water or food bowl mostly. Ocassionally I come home to
one placed perfectly in the middle of the bed. One day at work I reached
into my purse to get something and there was the ball! And yes, I have gone
to put my boots on and encountered a dropped ball.

Just like men have to get in touch with their feminine side (or so the
saying goes) it sounds like your cat is getting in touch with his canine
side!

After all - REAL cats are not daft enough to play fetch.

Are they?

I thought that sort of nonsense was left to dogs....

sarah ;) (who's own cat also occasionaly plays football as well).

I had a cat that loved to play fetch. She'd play it until my arm got
tired. I think it's a sign of intelligence.
Ann - 02 Feb 2005 21:13 GMT
Sam will play fetch for the longest time. I toss a knitted ball and he will
bat  it aroung and then drop it at me feet for me to toss again.Sam is a
formal feral and is 7 months old

It sounds like you got an amazing cat.  My two cats at home will sometimes
play hide & seek with each other, but not with me.  Tiger is female and 14
years old.  Otto is male and is 5 years old.  Tiger normally wants Otto to
leave her alone, but sometimes she'll decide to play.  One of them will
hide, usually IN something (like a box) and the other will have to seek.
They don't seem to care which one is hiding and which one is seeking, but
Otto usually ends up hiding and Tiger will seek him out.  Tiger really likes
if he goes into another room, and then she has a good time getting her belly
low to the ground and creeping off after him.

Since Tiger is a senior cat (she'll be 15 in April), it's very cute when she
decides that she has the energy to play a game with Otto.

Oscar doesn't play hide and seek, but she definitely loves to attack from her
favorite hiding spot (or just, you know, from the stairs, when you're trying
to get up or down them, especially when your hands are full ...)

I knew a cat who loved to play fetch, but only with crumpled tin foil.  Oscar
likes to chase things, but not to bring them back, so that game doesn't last
long =P

It sounds like you're quite enthused about this kitty.  It's great to hear
from fellow converts =)  I was never a cat person, either, but I wanted a
companion for my elderly dog, and I knew I didn't have time for a puppy.
Instead, I got Oscar, and I love her dearly.

OH Gooombahhhhhhhh!!!

He looks awfully crabby in the first picture, but he really is never
ever grumpy. He looks like he has a goatee doesn't he? I just thought
of something else funny about him...when his litter box needs to be
cleaned...he will somehow get the little shovel and put it in the
litter box. He is an immacualte cat and hates his litter being even
slightly messy.

I love the "war paint" markings on his face.  Well, that's what it looks like
to me.
