I adopted 2 litter mate brothers from a friend to replace my dog, who died
about a year before I got the kittens, I wasn't ready for another dog, since
I live alone, but I figured the cats could keep each other company while I'm
at work. Anyway - Gizmo (the smaller one) will sit next to me meowing, but
won't let me pet him for more than a couple seconds before moving away, only
to come back and meow at me some more within a minute. His brother Screech
will let me pet him to (his) heart's content.

They're just under 2 years old, Gizmo started the meowing thing a couple
months ago.

When I first got them, Gizmo was a little shier, but nothing like this.

They both sleep with me, Screech is usually curled up against me while Giz
is "thisclose". When I first got them Screech would usually sleep on me
(until I rolled over) while Giz would be tucked up against me.

Until these 2 I wouldn't have considered myself a cat person, so I'm really
lost when it comes to their behavior. Any ideas what's going on?

Er, what's going on about what?

I don't mean to make light of your question; I just don't see anything
particularly weird here.  Sounds like you have two cats with differing
personalities.  Perfectly normal.

What part of their behavior is bothering you?

Well, I don't even pretend to understand cat behavior, since I have about
1-1/2 years experience with them.

Just wanted to know if it was weird that the one would seem to crave
attention by constantly meowing then NOT wanting to get petted.

I can live with it if this is more-or-less normal cat behavior.

As near as I can tell, just about anything is normal cat behavior ... for at
least one cat.

Maybe your kitty is meowing for attention, but not of the touchy feely kind.
Maybe he's asking you to play or begging for food?

Or maybe he's just fickle.  Oscar is like that; she'll invite you to pet her,
then hiss and swipe at you for daring to touch her.  Go figure.  But other
times, she'll let me pet her for ten minutes or more ...

He's just not "touchy feely" but he is loving. He wants to be by you. They
also go through phases. I have a girl cat that, like yours, wants to be
"this close" and likes pets, but doesn't want to cuddle or be held. Well, lo
and behold at 7 years old, she is suddenly taken to coming on my lap and
being much more "hold me". They have very individual personalities just like
we do. Cats are much more like friends than pets.

Wow, this sounds just like my cat Squeekers.  He likes petted but don't you
dare hold him.  Then in the last year at 7 he's decided that while I'm
watching TV he likes to curl up in my lap and sleep.  You can live with a
cat for years and never really understand them..............:)
