I'll post the blank form here and answer it in the next post.
Maybe some of you have more questions to add?

Informal Questionnaire on Struvite Crystals

How long ago did you discover your cat had struvite crystals?

How old was your cat at the time?

Is/was your cat a male of a female?

What was your cat eating before he/she was diagnosed?  (wet, dry,
brands and varieties, schedule)

If the crystals were diagnosed because of a blockage, did your cat
survive?

If your cat survived:
What is your cat's current diet?  (wet, dry, brands and varieties,
schedule)

Has your cat reblocked?

If so, how many times?

Ouch!  Poor little thing!  Is the c/d he has been eating dry or
canned?

Have you learned anything useful from your experiences with
Lightning?

Lightning is a white DLH.  Very friendly with people and other kitties.   I
adopted him when he was about 5 years and he was not neutered.  He was
neutered as a condition of adoption.

He eats CD dry as do my other 4 "normal" kitties.

I have learned to look out for the symptoms of blockage.  Otherwise I do not
think there is much else to do since none f my others have had problems.

temporarily on canned Hill's I/D for a month because of diarrhea
previously on Royal Canin canned pH control S/O

> Has your cat reblocked?

Yes. First blockage was partial while the second one was a complete
blockage. Was rushed to an emergency vet clinics both times.
Was on dry C/D exclusively  for 2 years prior to the second blockage.
After the second blockage, the emergency vet recommended a 'sex change'
operation. But the regular vet said that should only be a last resort
and recommended canned food only.
Switched to canned Medi Cal Preventive and didn't go for the operation.

Was put on canned S/D for about a month immediatly after both
blockages, and once after urine crystals were found but not blocked.
4 years ago switched again to the Walthams canned pH control S/O.

All the prescription food switching were done on the vet's recommedations.
I also add distilled water to the canned food to increase water intake.

Thanks, Winnie.  I am hoping for some illumination for all of us
who deal with this issue.  Maybe I should add:

what breed is your cat?

Mingy is a color-point Persian, and I see they are predisposed to
such problems

and

How would you describe your cat's personality?

Mingy is very shy and nervous.............

Rusty is an orange tabby. The vet said he sees a lot of orange cats
have urinary problems. But maybe that's because most orange cats
are male.

Rusty is also shy and nervous. In fact he is currently on antidepressant
for frequently peeing on the floor. The vet thinks this is a behavioural
problem as his urine and other tests results were O.K.
I wonder whether he is picking up on my stress from being out of work.
I also don't like the idea of him on such medication long term. It is
always a struggle to pill him even though I am getting better at it.

How is Mingy doing now? Is he eating better now?
I forgot to mention that Rusty is fed 3 times a day. Used to be 1/2 can
twice a day, but the vet said he needs to put on some weight as he has
been losing weight. So now he gets 1 1/2   5.5 oz can daily.

Hi, Winnie,

Hmmmm.  Interesting that Rusty is shy and nervous too.  (I'm
thinking of the stress connection, which may play a role with
Mingy.)  Mingy hasn't eaten much today, although he did eat a bit
of canned food, which I hope to segue him into.  I also got him a
new fountain, which I'm hoping he'll find more tempting.

I haven't weighed Mingy but should.  He has always kept his weight
at a nice 10 lbs.  I wonder how much weight he has lost--also what
the ramifications of the food changes will be.

Altered male.

Yes.

Currently he eats Eukanuba PhO Moderate for Oxalate Stones, canned
only.  After he blocked and Hills s/d successfully dissolved the
struvite crystals, he was eating Hills Cd-s for appx. 5 years.   It
was then discovered on an x-ray for something unrelated to his urinary
problems that he had bladder stones.  The stones were surgically
removed and tested.  Turned out to be calcium oxalate stones.

Thanks.  Too bad there haven't been enough responses to put

> How long ago did you discover your cat had struvite crystals?

A long time ago, about 1987.  (My responses are all coming from memory,
so they may be off a bit.)

> How old was your cat at the time?

About 5

> Is/was your cat a male of a female?

Male, neutered

> What was your cat eating before he/she was diagnosed?  (wet, dry,
> brands and varieties, schedule)

He only really liked dry food and we had it in an automatic feeder at
the time.  It was a supermarket brand(s).  He didn't drink much water
either.

> If the crystals were diagnosed because of a blockage, did your cat
> survive?

He survived until 1992, when liver disease got him.

> If your cat survived:
> What is your cat's current diet?  (wet, dry, brands and varieties,
> schedule)

Until he died, we had him on a prescription canned diet from the vet,
but I can't remember the name.  It was a "low-ash" product.

> Has your cat reblocked?

He did once and required a second surgery.

> If so, how many times?

See above.
