Urgent: Can a sexually mature male mate with a sexually immature female?

Zathras - 29 Jan 2005 03:33 GMT I have two kittens that will hit the 6 month old mark in a couple days. Tonight, the male, Sachi, has begun to grab a hold of Hana's (the female) nape and the first time looked like he was trying to get into position before I distracted him. He's tried grabbing Hana's nape a few more times and I finally separated the two. Is this mating behavior by Sachi? It sure looks like it, but Hana is not in heat. Is it okay to let them stay together overnight or should I separate them? Can they actually mate if Hana has not matured yet? Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

Also her, but snippage with a boy is quicker and easier than a spay. Or take them in together. They are both of age to be fixed. Really, you need to do this.

Female cats can go into heat before the 6 months of age, & even though you haven't noticed her in a heat... since cats are induced ovulators, I'd take no chances.

Now I know why fathers are so protective of their daughters. ;-)

Zathras - 29 Jan 2005 16:23 GMT >We need pics!! :) Got a Yahoo album? Or you can post >some to alt.binaries.pictures.animals ... I posted two pics to abpa from when they were 2 months old, titled "Hana & Sachi at 2 months." They're scans from slides. Personally, I think they look much better now at 6 months old, but I haven't had time to take pictures and get them developed (no digital cameras in this house!). They're also eating better now, compared to the 9 Lives they were eating before I got them (yuck!). Sachi is the black one with the wide head. So what color pattern is Hana? She's basically black and cream with some orange stripes. And a large-ish patch of off-white between her tummy and her backside, which you can't see unless she's on her back. I was thinking she's a tortie, but it doesn't quite fit the article I read on torties. Mom was black, dad was orange tabby, if that helps.

OMG, they are beautiful! I would call Hana a tortie, but I am not very precise about those things. Thanks for posting, and hope you can keep the little teenagers "in their pants" 'til you get them altered, so to speak!

I will pass along your compliments. :-) But they're gorgeous no more, at least Hana isn't. She's been "on the verge" for a couple days now, and she's going nuts this morning. I thought the two might be able to cohabit under supervision, but Sachi was all over Hana in less than 5 minutes. Had to yank him out of the room really fast. He was not happy to go in that cage. One more day... Of course, I'm going to be gone about 12 hours today so I'm gonna have to make my dear mum take care of her. :-P I'll be sure to call regularly.

When will you get them in to be neutered?

They are both of age to be fixed. Really, you need to do this. Thanks for the reply. I was intending to take them both in tomorrow morning anyway, so this incident is just a little bit of a curveball. Guess I should have taken them in today, huh? Bad Sachi!

Sounds like she could be in heat but just hasn't started with all the moaning and groaning. She can get pregnant. I had a cat go into heat at 4.75 months! Now I spay/neuter all my kittens are 8 weeks. It's much easier on their bodies. If she does get pregnant, you can still spay her, the sooner the better.

Yeah, I think I got the two mixed up in terms of sexual maturity. Hana, who is usually fairly quiet, is locked in the bathroom and was howling for a long time. I think she's napping now after wearing herself out. :-P
