Changing drinking behaviour

My two cats absolutely refuse to drink out of a bowl of water left next
to their food (or anywhere!), but will only drink from the bathroom
(which is served by the storage tank).  This is ok for one of the cats,
who will happily drink from a small pool of water left in the bath, but
the 5 yr old female will only drink from trickling water from the basin
tap, which, if we're out can be distressing for us (and probably her)
to come home to find her perched on the edge of the bath waiting
patiently.

This is despite putting filtered water next to her food, and the bath
having water in it for the other cat.

Obviously the real concern is when were on holiday, and there's only
someone coming in once a day to feed them.  Recently she's been
refusing to eat her usual wet cat food too, so her trips to the
bathroom basin have become more frequent.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can change my cat's behaviour, or is
it a case of you can't teach an old cat new tricks?

have you tried a fountain?? Drinkwell or Petmate. I'd sure give it a whirl.

Wow, looks like the perfect solution, although I'll need to apply
gentle persuasion to stop her sitting on the edge of the bath though!

I'm amazed I've never seen one of these in a UK petshop!

I had considered one of those novelty 'perpetual' beer can toys you can
get where the liquid pours out of the can into a collecting bowl and
gets sucked back up by a pump, but this looks much nicer.

Thanks.

Two words. Water fountain.  If you cannot bear to get a pet one, perhaps a
simple indoor decorative one would do? As long as you can clean it easily,
it could be a feature for your home and a drink for kitty! Memphis used to
drink very little from a bowl and meow for the bathroonm tap to go on. Since
getting a pet fountain, he is happy with that and drinks plenty.

A 'Drinkwell' is now sitting under my desk at work - hopefully they
won't do their usual sniff and look of disgust when I take it home
tonight to try them out.

Thanks for the replies.

I hope it is successful too. Most cat owners I know say their cat prefers
running water, mine certainly do. They have not shown any interest in the
sinks since we got a fountain!

I got one yesterday, and I don't know whether Mingy has availed
himself of it.  Now he has an extra cup plus two fountains,  Good
luck to both of us!
