Cold trip to vet in carrier

Young master Francis goes to the vet tomorrow for his neutering.  It'll
probably be under 10 degrees F when we leave the house to get into a cab
tomorrow morning.  The trip to the vet's is about 1-10 minutes.  Cabs
around here are not well heated.

I'm thinking that along with little Junior Mint in the carrier I will
put his big fox stuffed animal, my PJ bottoms (flannel), and a hot water
bottle wrapped in a flannel shirt I've been wearing at home in the
evenings.  I think he'll be warm enough, but I'm open to feedback.

Yes, I do know I'm a worry-wart.

You could also wrap a blanket around the carrier. With everything else
you're doing, though, it sounds like he'll be ok (probably warmer than
you! *grin*)

LOL.  You may be right.  But then, I'm not the one who'll be going home
minus some parts of my anatomy.

Hi Priscilla!

Here's what I'd do...

If you happen to have a heating pad, heat it up on MED about 15 or 20
minutes before your cab is due to arrive. When the cab BEEPS to let you
know it's outside, pull the plug out of the wall, place it in the
carrier with your jammies on top. In goes Francis and you're on your way!

When you get to the vet, plug the pad into a wall outlet, so it'll be
nice and warm when you leave...

I like the idea of being able to warm it up again before you leave the vets.

Unless, of course, you've got one of those kitties who gets upset and pees
in the crate.

Could be very, very interesting special effects if you plug it into the wall
at the vets and the wet jammies start to heat up.

Ooooh, the hot water bottle is a nice idea.  I didn't much like
having Mingy out today--and it was warmer today than it will be
tomorrow.  Good luck with the trip and the neutering.

I think he'll be warm enough, too.

When I take a cat to the vet when it's cold outside, I have a towel that I
put over the top of the carrier - side-ways.  It's a hand-sized towel: I cut
a slit in its center, just long enough to slip over the carrier's handle, &
blanket-stitched the raw edges of the slit.  My carriers are each top &
front-loading ones, so this keeps the cold air from entering through the top
& the sides.  The front's still open to the air, so on the way from the
front door to the car, & then from the car to the vets' door, I try to keep
the front of the carrier from facing into the wind.  If the car's interior
is warm (remote started ahead of time), then I usually flip the sides of the
towel up during the actual drive over to the vets'.

Wow, Cathy, what a neat idea. And even I could stitch something simple
like that!

I've had to take Scarlett to the vet quite a few times lately (also
a short trip) and we're just about as cold as you are here in MD.
She's even had the added indignity of having an already shaved
tummy. I put a flannel sheet and a towel inside the carrier so that
it sort of forms a scoop that she can sit in the middle of, and I
cover the whole thing with a large beach towel so that it blocks
the cold air coming in through the vent holes.

Good luck to Jr tomorrow, and I'm a worry-wart too. :)

Purrs from Memphis and Phoenix for a good operation and safe transportation.
Phoenix in particular can sympathise as he was snipped only a couple of days
ago. No problem at all, and soon back to normal.

Well, that cold trip didn't happen today.  I could not get a cab to
come.  Two out of three cab companies didn't even answer their phone
(well, one was continuously busy and the other put me on "all our
operators are busy" hold), and the third couldn't find a cab in my area.

I called the vet practically in tears and told her I'd have to cancel
and try again another day, when I'd see if my neighbor could drive me.
The original plan was for a friend to drive Francis (without me), but
she's gotten wierd lately and is avoiding me.  I don't know what's up.

But Francis was good as GOLD!  He waited quietly in the guestroom while
his siblings had breakfast and while I showered, dressed, and
breakfasted.  Then he waited on the flannel-wrapped hot water bottle in
his carrier while I phoned around for an hour trying to get us
transportation.  He only mewed a few times.  Such a champ!

So finally I let him out and gave him breakfast.  He didn't understand
why I was so upset or why he'd been given a time-out in that comfy warm
carrier, but anything that encourages face-rubbing with Mommy must be
good, yes?

The vet was so nice.  I apologized, and she (actually the receptionist)
said she was just concerned about me.  I was on the verge of tears --
and did have a nice little jag after everything was over -- partly
because I'd gotten so worked up about the visit.  My little baby, his
growing up, his heart murmur, the possibility (slight) that something
bad might happen in the operation, my having to get up 2+ hours early to
take him over, and so on.

Well, I have the carrier set-up down now (hot water bottle wrapped in
flannel PJ bottoms, flannel shirt folded up along one side of carrier,
favorite stuffed leopard in the back, Francis snuggled in amongst it
all) and just have to get the transportation more firmly fixed.

*sigh*

Ack!  All that angst and preparation for naught.  And here I
thought it would be an early update.  Poor you.

It'll disappear into the fog of history eventually.  Once it's finally over.

You're right, it will; but is frustrating while still in the present.

You're singing my tune.

The wife component of my neighbors says that the husband component
leaves for work right exactly when I'd need to leave to get to the
vet's, and his workplace is just a few minutes down the main drag over
there, so I'm calling him this weekend to ask if he'll drop me off on
either Tuesday or Thursday.

I had just yesterday been emailing WC telling her she had the sweetest
husband in the world after he shoveled me out from *two* snow storms
plus dug my trash out and put it out with theirs, and today when I
emailed WC to ask whether she thought it would work out to ask HC for a
lift, I had to preface it with a diclaimer that all the nice things I'd
said about HC yesterday were not a set-up for this favor!  LOL

They are such good neighbors.  We cat sit for each other.  Their cat is
the most hostile theoretically-domesticated feline I have ever
encountered.  After 6 years of cat sitting she still won't let me touch
her, and she barely deigns to be in the same room with me.  When I put
her treat down in front of her upon my arrival in the house she looks at
me like she wishes she could spit acid in my face.  Such a sweet kitty.  :-(

Priscilla,

Purrrrrs are coming your way. I'm sorry you didn't make it today. If I
lived near you, I'd give you a ride! *grin* Give all your kitty-babies
pets for me!

Gosh, that's an onerous task, but I think I'm up to it!  ;-)

Heh - T.D.F.'s - those cats who are a tad on the nonfriendly side.

That's really nice about your neighbors.  Maybe their cat tries to
counterbalance them. ;-P

I feel for you as I went through a similar experience.  One time I had to
take Rusty to board at the vet clinic while I went on a trip. On the day of
my departure, it was snowing but not that heavily. I couldn't get a cab to
come take me to the vet clinic. All the cab companies phone lines
were busy. When I did get through, I was told it would be a 2 hr. wait.
But the cab never showed up. I ended up canceling the boarding and was lucky
enough to find someone to come cat-sit at very short notice.
Then  I dragged my luggage on the city bus to go to the airport. No problem
with the bus.

You just reminded me to be grateful for small, medium, and large
mercies!  So Francis goes next week?  So I have to Get Up Early one day
next weeks as well.  Well, boo hoo for me!  No, I know you didn't say
that, but I'm starting to.  Yeah, so I got pissed off and frustrated.
I'll live.

I'm glad you were able to find a cat sitter.  *whew*

Don't know about your area, but in some areas cab companies allow you make
reservations the night before.  The times aren't always guaranteed, so it's
often best to make the reservations a bit earlier than you need.

I hope you can get Francis to the vet soon!  Poor baby (and poor Priscilla,
too!).

Awww :( Well, you're having bad weather, so I imagine the cabs are a
premium right now. Purrs that it works out next time. At least he'll
be warm!

We had to take Luna to the vet on Saturday here in the Chicago area and
it's a 10-15 minute drive.  Took her out in her carrier (with only a towel
in the bottom) to a not-warmed up car, drove her to the vet and she was
just great.  We've done this with all our cats for the past 9 years and
they've all been fine.

That's one of the things cat fur is good for - it keeps them warm!  :-)
I don't think you have to worry too much about a 10 minute trip - they're
not going to get frostbite or hypothermia from such a short ride....

The trip has been rescheduled for tomorrow, when it should be
considerably warmer -- 20s or 30s as opposed to zero.  My neighbor is
driving us over and will drive us home.  I'm not planning on using the
hot water bottle, just lots of flannel that smells like me, plus his
favorite stuffy.

My little baby's going under the knife!  Aaarrgghhhh!!!!

Ahem.  Sorry about that.

Yep, it was up to 30? here today - positively balmy, compared with the last
couple of weeks of 0? & sub-zero readings.
