Cats indoor aggressive behavoir

Hello All!

We have had Angel & Spirit our 2 tabbies for almost 7 years now. Never
had anything but a brief "attitude" problem early on as kittens. Angel
was a "thrown away" kitten we found on the street. With training, love
and attention, she has become a very loveful & lovable lap kitty.

Spirit was the "farm cat" we got from a friend's litter down the road.
Spirit is a loveful cat also, but not too much of a lap kitty. She was
cared for in the same manner as Angel; we love them both dearly & equally.

Both have been most friendly to everyone who comes into our home, which
makes their current behavoir such a mystery. They play together, run,
chase & tumble, groom each other, eat together with no fighting ever.

Just the past few days Angel [the older] has been growling, hissing and
very unhappy with her sister. We had a devil of a time with them last
night; almost afraid to leave them in their room without a referee! They
are full-time indoor cats.

Today, they are a little calmer, but Angel still growls whenever Spirit
gets too close.

Nothing has been changed in the house to cause them to become ultra
territorial; we did change their food, as the store was out of their
regular chow, but that shouldn't effect them to this magnitude...should it?

Any guidance at a diagnosis/remedy would be most welcomed and appreciated!

Many thanks for taking the time to respond!

There may have been a strange cat or animal outside you did not notice but
they did and this is misdirected aggression. I would keep them apart
unsupervised until you see the behaviour diminish and I would add a couple
of Feliway diffusers to the home.
