KellyH - 15 Jan 2005 00:40 GMT My brother-in-law gave us the "advice" that we need to get rid of the cats because of the coming babies. Yeah, right.

And yes, there are two babies :)

My dad always said he wanted me to be twins, so that we could entertain ourselves (the pregnancy was unexpected and mom wasn't about to have another one; she was already 37). I'm kinda glad there's only one of me; I don't think the world could take two!

My doctor told me that I ought to get rid of my cats due to allergies and asthma worsening this winter. When he saw the look on my face he then said, "Or at least don't REPLACE them." When he saw the look on my face after the last comment, she said, "What? They don't live that long, do they?"
I of course was thinking 1) You must be out of your mind! Get RID of my cats? Just so I can breathe? and 1) REPLACE them?! REPLACE THEM? Isn't that what you do with broken DISHES?? and 3) Pffft. Like I could ever live without cats.
Meghan Noecker - 17 Jan 2005 05:47 GMT >My doctor told me that I ought to get rid of my cats due to allergies and >asthma worsening this winter. When I was 5, my doctor said I was allergic to dogs and told my parents that I should not had dogs in my room.
Yah, right. The dog was sleeping on my bed. Explain that to a 5 year old. Later, I got a long haired dog, and she slept under the covers.
But then, my mom is allergic to both cats and dogs, and I can't remember a time without at least two of each.

Be prepared for more to offer the same advice. When I was pregnant, everyone and their dog was telling me "well I guess you'll be getting rid of the cats now" Yeah right, if I had been planning to get rid of the cats when I had a baby then I wouldn't have gotten the cats in the first place. It's not like they are disposable. The cats are great with the baby, the fat black one really seems to like her so I always tell Rhiannon "that's your cat"

Yeah, right. Does anyone ever suggest "get rid of your dog" when a baby is due?

I'm quite sure Toxoplamosis and the mythical "they'll steal your breath" has more to do with it than anything.
Cat Protector - 15 Jan 2005 16:45 GMT Good point. It seems that is always the cat that gets the boot when the baby comes.

Yeah, right. [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Does anyone ever suggest "get rid of your dog" when a baby is due? Yes!!!!! Unfortunately our local RSPCA centre in Sussex, UK, is full of abandoned animals where the cause is give either as "marital breakdown" or "baby due." That is how we got Chloe cat, because the neighbours were on their third kid in 5 years and shoved her out every night, rain, snow, the lot just 'cos they feared that the cat would lie on the baby So she came to us for love and care.
I say; is that a reason why a 6 foot 3 inch man shouldn't marry a 4 foot tall woman or vice versa? Just in case one rolls over and smothers the other in bed?

I can think of a few reasons why a 6'3" man might not want to marrya 4' tall woman, but that surely isn't one of them. ;)
mlbriggs - 15 Jan 2005 06:14 GMT > My brother-in-law gave us the "advice" that we need to get rid of the cats > because of the coming babies. Yeah, right. From what I have read, you should not be the one to clean the litter box. However, if you have to, you should wear rubber gloves and a dust mask. Purrs that the pregnancy goes well and that you have two great babes. MLB

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > kelly at farringtons dot net > "Wake up, and smell the cat food" -TMBG Congrats! One thing we did before we brought our baby home (almost 7 years ago) was to remove the nursery room door and replace it with a screen door. It kept the kitties out of his room, but allowed me to hear him cry. Our girl cat, Ginger, took it upon herself to be the "babysitter". She sat outside my son's room every night and came to get me if he cried. Now, almost 7 years later, the cats adore our son. We removed the screen door when our son was about 2.
