I have started sprinkling baking soda in the litter boxes to control
oder.  The cats don't seem to mind it, and it's supposed to be safe.
I just wondered if any one has experienced any kind of problems
using it. I am afraid of using the kitty litter with oder crystals &
it is very ex[ensive.  I also have quit using counter wipes & floor
cleaners  containing harmful chemicals. My babies lick their paws.
Any help greatly appreciated......

Baking soda is fine.  I use Swheat Scoop litter and it works pretty well.  I
use a steam cleaner to clean floors, and I use vinegar for a lot of cleaning.
There's a really good book out there called Clean and Green that lists things
that are safe to use for cleaning.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is an alkaline substance.  I mean, they
use it for antacid (although it tastes like hell) among other things, so
yeah, it's pretty safe.

As far as silica crystal litter and the mixes... I've not had any
experience with the mixes, but the pure stuff works pretty well, though
you're right - it's pricey.  That, and you'll have to scoop it and stir it
once per day to keep it from losing effect.
