Cat swatting owner

Hi everyone
I have a question regarding my cat's odd behavior.  I have a 5 year old
tabby male cat.  He is the only pet after we had lost his friend, a
rabbit, three years ago.  He is also an indoor cat with chronic urinary
tract crystals.  This condition built up recently and he had to spend
two weeks at the vet.  Thankfully, surgery was not needed and he is now
on a specialzed diet and the crystals are at bay.
Recently my cat has been acting weird toward me during the evening.
Two swatting incidents have occurred- the first time was during late
afternoon.  I was on the couch and my cat  was on the arm of the couch
(our usual positions).  My cat gave me this "mean" stare as if he was
totally mad at me.  I felt scared but ignored the behavior and kept
watching tv.  Then like a minute later he swatted my face really hard.
The second time was about a half hour after i fed him.  Again i was on
the couch and he was on the arm of the couch.  My back was toward him
and out of nowhere he swatted me on the forehead and actually made me
bleed.  This incident did not have any pre-cursor behaviors..usually i
know when he is fiesty and wants to play (wags tail, runs around the
house). But there was nothing..
I usually don't physically play with him on a weekly basis.  I
do,however, have a cat toy box with his favorite toys and i tempt him
with it.  He gladly plays on his own with the toys and seems to enjoy
it.
I feel that this behavior may be towards the fact that i don't play
with him (run around with a string)..but i thought his cat box is
enough?
Why is he swatting me out of nowhere?  He is usually a very cuddly cat
and enjoys being petted and likes receiving attention.
any suggestions would be helpful

Sounds like he was tryig to 'grab' you and drag you to him for some
attention and cuddling.

Seems odd, though, that he's started this behavior after five years ...

My Buddha does this. But not with claws.

My next door's and next door but one's cats all do this if they are sitting
on the end of the wall as I walk down the path. I have to either dodge or
stroke. :)

Boo does is when you stop petting if she thinks it is too soon! And also,
when you are passing the kitchen chair she is sleeping in, if she wants
petting. This cat also hisses at you if she is comfortable in your lap
and you move!

I just got thwacked accidentally waking Kami mid REM sleep. She about
took my arm off.

Shouldn't the subject been changed to the more appropriate "Cat Abusing
Staff"?

Well, would you?

While he was at the vet was he in his own area? or did he feel threatened? Maybe he is still alittle frightened and is trying to set his territory with you? i hope you get things to work out

Does the urinary problem or treatment still cause him pain? Or might
something else be biting him, some parasite? Perhaps he felt a twinge of
pain and thought you had caused it, since you were close by. I'd have the
vet check him again, or I'd at least watch and see if he occasionally
twitches and looks round in anger when you aren't close.

This sounds right to me.  I was wondering if he wasn't well yet or was
unwell again, and the way she put it fits with my understanding of how
cats think.

I would also try adding a couple of Feliway diffusers around the house. He
may still be uncomfortable from the urinary problems and somehow associates
it with you. Feliway can help calming him which in turn also helps with the
urinary problems since stress (even imagined stress) is a factor in this
problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I will consider Feliway.  It just seems
odd that he is exhibiting this behavior after a few months from
returning from the vet for his urinary problem.
Oh well, i will do my best to watch over him and move away if i see him
staring at me meanly :-)

Perhaps the pain has only just begun again.

:) Well, if something is paining him, it might need treatment.

Exactly.

Sometimes, Kira will get swatty because she is a brat. But that is
also how she acts when she doesn't feel good. So while others may
laugh at her antics, I will go into diagnostic mode. I will pet her in
various places to see if she reacts to a certain spot. One time, I
think she was just constipated. She was grumbly for about an hour, but
she was fine when I checked her again.

Another time she went from grumpy to growling without being touched.
That was a trip to the vet and well worth it.

Basically, I check them over and give them a time limit. If they
aren't better by then, they go to the vet.
