I've got a 4 1/2 year old American shorthair female cat (Indoor Only). She
keeps having bad itching, and I can't tell why. I keep fleas off of her by
regularly applying Hartz flea and tick repellent (the liquid kind that comes
in the plastic vials and is applied between her shoulderblades. But despite
this she keeps itching. I've physically check her over to see if I can find
any fleas or ticks but I don't find anything when I do that either.
However I will find and occasional bump that almost feels like a rash, but
its impossible for me to tell.
This is something that's only started within the last 2 months, and nothing
about her living conditions have changed
If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Or better yet, something I
can apply that would at least alleviate the itching.
Thanks

My cat itches from a skin disease/allergy syndrome called EGC.
You know you need to take yours to a vet. It isn't expensive,
and he can give you something to take care of it.

First, *STOP using any Hartz product.* There have been a number of adverse
reactions to it, including some deaths. If you google, you will find lots
of information about this and about some lawsuits that wer filed.
Second, you need to get your cat to a vet for a correct diagnosis. This
could be an allergic reaction, possibly even an allergy to fleas. Your vet
will also be able to give you a much safer -- and more effective --
treatment for fleas, such as Advantage.

Let me second what MaryL said. Avoid over-the-counter
products like the plague. The vet-supplied products are
a lot more expensive, but work better and are much much
safer for the animal. You can also find some of them
cheaper online.

Fleas in Texas were unusually bad the past year. Many indoor cats
that have never had fleas before have gotten them this year from
fleas riding in on people's clothing, according to my vet.
The Hartz stuff you're applying is basically like spraying the cat's
neck with Raid. Cats have been poisoned by it, and it's killed
some cats. And it's not very effective on fleas, either. Get the
much safer and more effective Advantage or Frontline from a vet.
She could also have a skin allergy, eczema, ringworm, or other medical
problem making her itchy. Take her to the vet.
