My current set of cats are: Mama Kitty, Jayne, Spock, Shadow, Scotty, and Ruby. Have had lots over the years, ever since I was a kid. Mom had a big old barn full of cats, and they all got named. I usually just let the cat tell me their name. After a while I start to notice personality traits and the name just sort of follows.
However, there are some notable exceptions: *) Mama Kitty - formally 'Sylvia', big longhair shiny-white with blue eyes (not deaf). She was the next-door neighbors cat but by the time she was 8 weeks old she had moved in with us - the neighbor had lots of cats and told me she didn't mind if Sylvia preferred us, so that was that. We had little money in those days, so the poor cat had kittens before we could get her fixed, then kept getting preggers (hence the name Mama Kitty) until I finally found a vet that would "spay now - pay later" for us.
This was about 13 years ago, and at the time I didn't know about groups that would help defray the cost of spaying/neutering. We lived in a very rural area and most animals didn't seem to get fixed, but that was changing rapidly by the time we moved away. Now all my pets are spayed or neutered, and I think they're all happier about it. I know Mama Kitty is!!!
*) Jayne - A brindle-colored Scottish Fold female that showed up on my porch one day about six years ago. I forbid the kids to pet or feed her, hoping she'd go back home. Eventually she got skinnier, with the exception of her belly (yep, preggers!), so I had the kids take her door to door looking for her owners. No one claimed her, so she had her litter in my closet and we soon got her fixed. At the vet's we had to come up with a name for her records - I chose Jane because she was such a 'Plain Jane' cat - not pretty at all. But then I felt that even a plain jane deserved something a little fancy, so gave her the Jayne Mansfield spelling. The vet also was able to give me a clue as to Jayne's possible origins. He told me that a local family had tried to raise Scottish Folds for profit, but found the associated health problems too hard to deal with (they were apparently breeding two Fold Ears together, instead of using just one - big mistake). The family had since left the area and their cats were abandoned.
*) Spock - One of Jayne's kittens, now all grown up. He is technically called a Straight-Eared Scottish Fold. His big, upright ears earned him his name. He's a big (15 lb.) boy, a gray and black Tabby. Full of attitude, great guy.
*) Shadow - Spock's all black sister, also a Straight Eared Scottish Fold from Jayne. She's a very delicate cat that would be a ballerina if human, very smooth and beautiful motions even if she's just walking across the room. A real beauty!
*) Scotty - Another of Jayne's kids - a brindle Scottish Fold male with the Folded Ears. Is already getting the stiffness that some Scotty's get, as a result he's pretty much floor-bound and worries about being stepped on, so he's usually hiding. Poor guy.
*) Ruby - A grey and white shorthair female that was born to a stray in our barn. The mother and the rest of the litter mysteriously died, so one of my kids finished raising Ruby and named her because she thought Ruby's eyes were like jewels and thought that ruby's were blue, you get the picture. Ruby is another not real friendly-type, only wants me or my daughter to handle her, but a pretty little girl just the same.
One note: I've learned my lesson with regards to spaying and neutering - all of my pets for the last 10 years have been fixed - don't let your pets propagate without good reason - finding good homes for all the offspring is hard - that's why I have so many of Jayne's kids still with me!

Thank you for that, and for sharing about your cats. Also, your story about Jayne illustrates why some of us hate Backyard Breeders so much! Thank you for giving that poor girl a home.
Briefly, my cats are:
Bartleby: 5 years old, all black male. Adopted as a kitten from the shelter, just after DH and I moved in together. My cat Dash (RB) was not much of a lap cat and DH wanted a cat of his own. I think Bartleby is a little insane.
Loki: 5 years old, brown tabby with white chest and feet. Adopted at the same time as Bartleby because we could not decide between the two. Turned out to be a good decision as they played together and Dash ignored them. Names were chosen from the movie Dogma. Loki is very lovey-dovey and can't get enough attention.
NewCat: 9 years old, grey and white, I like to pretend she is a British Shorthair. She was adopted by a former co-worker from the shelter but was not working out in her home. I felt bad for her and took her home. She came with the name Muffy but we both hated it. Couldn't think of a better name and NewCat stuck. She is a very sweet girl and loves alone time with her people.
Mia: Went to the shelter on a whim and DH fell in love with Mia. She is very much Daddy's girl and loves to sit with him. She's about 3-4 yrs, black white cow spotted. Mia seemed like a nice cute name for a cute girl.
Toffee: We got Toffee from the same co-worker as NewCat. Someone had found Toffee in a tire and was keeping her in the garage, didn't know what to do with her. Co-worker took her in but couldn't keep her, she was about 8 months old at the time. Co-worker and I were looking for shelters where she would not be put down and stumbled upon the one I am currently involved with. I was keeping her for a few days until the shelter could take her, but it was too late. Toffee was so named because she is a tortie and her coloring reminded us of Toffee. She's about 2 1/2 now.
Antonio: A semi-feral foster of mine that I kept. He's orange tiger and white, 1 yr old. I got him at about 6 months old and just could not part with him. He came with the name. Not really sure why they named him Antonio, but it stuck.

raenee - 05 Jan 2005 03:42 GMT I've only got one cat, and her name is Lucky. What happened was that a stray had her kitten in our backyard( 15ftx8ft ) and two days later, we woke up and there was only one kitten left because the mom had moved her kittens. I figured that I would wait until I got home from school to figure something out. When I got home from school, the kitten was still there and wobbling around and making noise looking for it's mom. Since the mom hadn't come by in 8 hours, we took her to the humane society. They didn't have any cats feeding kittens that young, so I volunteered to foster her. At the end of my fostering time, I told them I wanted to keep her. When I first had her in my care, I had a lot of trouble getting her to accept the bottle. She didn't like it and kept spitting out the nipple and the milk. Anyways, when I was finally able to get her to use it, I dubbed her Lucky, because she was lucky to have someone there to help her out.

PaBo - 05 Jan 2005 09:17 GMT My cat Star, was named for 2 reasons, number 1 is because she is the star of my heart, number 2 is, she is a white and red tabby, on her back the white part loks like a Texas lone Star. Our other Cat Maui we named after the Hawaiian Island. He is a longhair various shades of gray, like a lava rock. We just got back from Maui when we went to the shelter and found him. the name fits really well. they are both lovies. If Maui was a girl cat we were going to name it Pele, another Hawaiian Goddess.

Pabo, I think you need to make the file open to the public. It is a selection under "options" or something like that. I really want to see them!
PaBo - 05 Jan 2005 14:03 GMT Mary,

As you may have noticed, I'm kinda into wine. I'm one test away (which I take in the spring) from having my Sommelier Diploma. Hence the wine theme names. But, they are'nt random names, so here's the explination:
Chablis: She's a long hair, tuxedo colored black & white. Mostly black, The reigon of Chablis in france is part of Burgundy, Which is a predominantly black (red) grape producing area (Pinot Noir mostly). The reigon of Chablis, is small in comparison to the rest of Burgundy & produces only white wine (from Chardonnay grapes).
Muscat: He's an all black, short hair, compact little guy. Muscat is a black (red) grape which is fairly small in terms of planting & production. As a name, it also has the advantage of being a play on words...
So, there you go... That's my story & I'm sticking to it. Mathew Butler to 2 kittens: Chablis & Muscat En Vino Veritas
Gail Futoran - 06 Jan 2005 20:14 GMT I've always named my cats after favorite fictional characters - SF or fantasy. When I acquired 2 Tonks and a stray (which might be a RagaMuffin) four years ago, I was hooked on the TV show "Xena: Warrior Princess". So: 1) Long sleek platinum mink female = Lao Ma (inappropriately named because she's *never* serene!) 2) Small but tough and adorable champagne mink female = Ephiny (appropriately named for a petite Amazon) 3) Cute gray-brown-white calico/?RagaMuffin female = Minya Two most recent acquisitions: 4) Sable Burmese female - Mattie 5) Blue Burmese male - Harry

I feel like an underachiever, with only two cats in my whole life!
First cat was temporarily named "Mouse", as she was tiny, and grey, seemed too small to be a cat - she fit into the palm of my hand. I adopted her from a litter at a local greenhouse. She never provided a better name, and became 18#s of probable- Maine Coon, not an oz of fat on her. She had a second name, rarely used: Lady Grae. Simply, because she was. Actually, she was barely a lady, but SHE thought she was. I've rarely met a more vain cat - especially about that beautiful Maine Coon tail.
Unfortunately, we had to rehome Mouse before moving overseas - at the time, Australia had a 9-month quarantine and that wouldn't have been fair for her. It was traumatic, for both of us. After that I made a promise to NEVER, EVER do that again. "Next cat, if she can't go, I don't either..."
Later, after moving to England, we adopted a black kitten from the local Cats Protection League. Her and her family were the victims of a person who refused to spay her queen, then could not deal with the consequences - momma cat and all 5 kittens were left at the shelter.
The first week, my new kitten would wander around, I imagine looking for her siblings, saying, "Meep? Meep?" - the name just stuck. Meep is 8 years old now, and has lived in three different countries: I kept my promise. And she still meeps, but now she's looking for me. We're very closely bonded, and she's my little shadow. Right now, she's hanging out on her vetfleece just outside the computer room door, and will go downstairs with me (and demand a lap) when I go watch TV.
She sometimes travels with us, and will tolerate a harness and leash, as well as her new polarfleece coat.
If you'd like to see what Meep looks like, check out her pages at:
