They drink crappy water, and like it!

dgk - 03 Jan 2005 20:31 GMT I provide fresh water. I bought one of those fountains for them. Yet they go into the backyard and drink the rain water that has been accumlulating in various planter things. Brackish, gross looking stuff. Slurp. MMMmmmm Good.
And I think, well, they're cats. Maybe they are just designed to require the stuff that is found in brackish water? It isn't polluted or anything, just full of dirt and leaves and such. Not to my liking. But then again, I haven't given it an honest try. Probably better for them than whatever is added to the drinking water.

I keep a saucer of water on the floor of the shower for when mine want to eschew the tame liquid at their eating station.

Barb - 03 Jan 2005 23:01 GMT I give my cats fresh water with their meals. Two of them would prefer to hang upside down and drink out of my bath tub. I have to wait until they're finished to start using soap.
-- Barb Of course I don't look busy, I did it right the first time.
Ma3rk - 04 Jan 2005 04:03 GMT It took me awhile (read several cats) to notice this, but nearly every cat I've had in the past 20+ years has waited for me to finish my morning shower so they can hop in to lick the tub. Different cities, different soap, different water of course. I've no clue as to what they find so tasty but as with many things Cat, I've simply learned to just live with it.

One of mine, 10yo, has just started doing that in the past year. Funny thing is, when I'm doing my face in the morning, in front of the bathroom mirror, he also jumps into the bath and sits there to watch me.

Same thing here, but only with two of mine. I provide filtered water in several nice, big bowls, and although they do drink out of those, Cosmo and Arthur insist on drinking out of the tub. In fact, I have to sit there and turn on the water so they can drink the bit that collects at the bottom. All I can do is shake my head.

Spot - 04 Jan 2005 23:46 GMT I had a cat years ago who would insist that I put fresh water in the bathroom sink every morning so he could get a drink. The rest of the time he was happy to drink from his bowl in the kitchen.

Yup, mine like the shower water left overs.

My black cat, Ghoti (pronounced "Fish"...figure it out), waits in the bathroom and gets mad at me if I forget and close the shower door when I'm done.
I get a serious scolding until I open it so he can lap up the water.
Our little white one, Tazendra, is fascinated with cups and glasses -- it doesn't really matter what's in it, she has to check it out. Of course, she crinkles her nose and runs away if there's coffee, tea, OJ, beer or whatnot in it, but always tries to steal a sip if it's water.
And *no* straw in the house is safe from either Tazendra or Jezebel. Turn your back for a second, and the girls steal them. They like drinking straws better than the store-bought mousies as toys.
And no matter how many times I refill it with fresh water, at least one, if not both, of the regular water dishes gets stepped in shortly thereafter -- I can see the floaties, but haven't figured out yet who does it.

One of my previous cats some 20+ years ago was absolutely fascinated with water. When we got him, he was about 6 months old. He'd been rescued by a family that literally had a menagerie so Gonzo's early formative months were with raccoons.
He became our 4th cat at the time so we used a 3 gallon fishbowl for their water. He thought it great fun to drop crunchies in the bowl, wait for them to swell up, then stand in the bowl and fish them out. We'd be watching TV and slowly notice this "ploosh, ploosh, ploosh" sound. We'd investigate and there was Gonzy, standing with just his front legs in the bowl with a 4 foot diameter puddle of water surrounding it. He'd just look up at us of course and go "What?". Perfectly normal for him I guess.

Chris H - 04 Jan 2005 02:50 GMT Our cat drank iced-tea out of a glass on my lap when he was a kitten. Since that time, he will only drink water from a glass. To make matters worse, when he stayed at Grandma's house, she filled up the sink so he could drink! Now, he will sit on the bathroom counter and stare at you in the den until you fill up the sink for him!
Those darn cats! You have to love them!!
PaBo - 04 Jan 2005 11:25 GMT hello,
my cats are indoor cats. they like the water to sit around for awhile before they drink it. Both of the cats like to hang around in the bathroom. they like to sit on the rug while I am bathing or in the shower. they like to lick the water on the tub when I get out. Of course i fully rinse the tub after bathing and showering. Pamela, Mom to Star and Maui.

We'd love to see pictures of Star and Maui if you have any. You can post them to alt.binaries.pictures.animals or--(and this is so easy even I could do it) go to Yahoo.com and set up a photo album, then post the link here.

I had family staying with me over Christmas, and I had to warn them not to leave a full toothglass in the bathroom unless they didn't care if my 5 month-old kitten took a drink out of it. ;-) I deliberately leave my full for him and just rinse it out when I want to use it.

My wife once left a bucket of water in the garage with some plants that she wanted to root. Ruf took to drinking there, no matter that he always had fresh water beside his dish. I kept refilling that bucket with the leaves for over a year. We called it "cat tea". And then, suddenly, he quit drinking there and went back to his dish. He is now very persnickity about the freshness and cleanliness of his water dish.
Who knows!
Signature My cat and I are very much alike: we're both gray, we're both fat, and we both dig in his litter box.
