Diabetes is no more unusual in felines than in humans. You'll find a great
deal of useful information on caring for your diabetic cat at:

Hello D.,

I was shocked when our cat was diagnosed, too. I have since found out
that a larger percentage of cats than people have diabetes. Some say
that it's because many of our cats eat dry food, which contains lots of
carbs, and cats' systems are not set up to handle all of that sugar. Our
cat was overweight so that was a factor, but his trigger was an allergy
treatment involving steroids.

Please log onto the message board at www.felinediabetes.com. You'll get
great help there to questions you may have.

We had our cat on Purina DM after diagnosis, and that wet food helped
regulate his sugar level.

Good luck with your cat,

Rhonda

While I was in high school, a friend's cat had diabetes.  She lived to a ripe
old age despite that and other health problems.  She was so accustomed to the
insulin shots that she really didn't mind, and even pet sitters like me could
give her shots.  You'd simply feed her and then, while she was distracted by
food, pull up the fold of fur above her shoulderblades and give her the shot.
She'd often be purring while I did this.

I'm sure that feline diabetes treatment has come a long way since then, but
even then it really wasn't a hassle.
