Henry's really taken to indoor life. Given our recent harsh spell of
Minnesota winter, I figure we've already saved his life.

He's the typical long-hair mutt with strong Maine Coon/Norway Cat
indications - the same coloring, ear tufts, huge mane and footpad
tufts.

Since he's been adopted, he's shown a real appetite, and he's getting
pretty large. He had a bout of diarrhea a few weeks ago, and we
brought him to the vet who found nothing wrong with him. While he was
there I asked if they could at least clean him up.. =P which they did
with a soapy solution and some judicious clipping.

I'm a bit worried that he's gotten so large he just can't reach his
butt to clean it. It's becoming progressively dirtier, and he seems
none too happy with our efforts to clean him up.

Has anyone else had this problem? Does it have to do with his weight
or is he just lazy?

We've begun a regimen of diet food and portioning, which is still
possible since he's sequestered from the other cats (another thread).

Eh. Venting about our frustration with him reserved for another
topic..

Have the vet shave the butt area. It will make maintainance much easier for
him. My cats love it once it's done.

I do this on my long haired maine coon.  Also, take a close look at when
he's trying to groom himself, does he have long belly hair that gets in
the way?  My cat would spend a good half hour trying to clean his butt,
but was really just grooming the longest strands of belly hair.  I got a
$15 miniclipper from petsmart and shorten the belly hair between his
back legs and trim his butt to 1cm.

If you see him start grooming and obviously having a lot of trouble
reaching his back end, then weight could be the problem.

I hate to mention it, but some cats just dont bother cleaning themselves
at all.

Cats are fastidious about grooming and I think usually there is a
reason why they stopped bothering to groom.

I think I heard someone once say that a dirty bottom was almost a side effect of
obesity in cats, because they can't get round their tums.

Of course it is. All you have to do is watch a fat cat try to
bathe.

Yes, I have heard this too and it certainly seems logical.

My sister has a tiny (6lb fully grown) female who has about zero
interest in bathing, quick lick and thats it.  This has been discussed
with the vet and no underlying reasons have been found.  She's the only
cat I've known like it, so hopefully she's the exception to the rule,
but dirty cats do exist (Thank gawd I dont have one)

I'm not sure I would if I had to do it the way they do. ;)

I can't reach my bum with my tongue anyway, so it's not an option .

I'll bet your neck isn't long enough either!

We have this problem with our overweight cat. I think if I were you and
I could afford it I might just take him to a professional to have him
groomed
and clipped until he gets enough weight off to reach his nether regions.

Thanks for the feedback (you and other posters).

Is there a way to determine how much to feed little Henry?

Your vet will have a food to weight ratio chart... I have one here if you
post the cat's weight I can look it up....

Hi I had a fat cat with a dirty butt too.  She was old so I guess they don't
fuss as much when there seniors.  My solution was baby wipes.  She didn't
like it and neither did I.  But it worked.  Just be gentle and he'll get
over it.

Was there a problem with rationing her food so she wouldn't be so fat?
