We have a weekly segment on our TV station CKCO (CTV affiliate) where
a spokesperson (Mark) from the KW Humane Society brings a couple of
pets to the studio to publicize adoptions. Today he had a 4 yr old
Siamese female that he went on and on about how friendly she is but
like to scratch things so plenty of scratching posts or declawing
would be a good idea. He even added declawing would assist this cat in
quickly adjusting to the home!!! This is 4 year old cat for Christ
sakes!!!

Let them know what you think.

I wish I had the software tools to transfer the VHS recording I have
to an AVI or WMF so that everyone could see the segment for
themselves.

I'm sure it would be truly disgusting to see.  Reminds me of that show on
Animal Planet that had a vet do a declaw on one of their shows.  Don't know the
details because I didn't actually see the show myself, but others did.  Sick!

I sent your tv station and humane society an email.  I hope they get a lot of
complaints!

The fellow (Mark from the KW Humane Society) who always presents the
animals in this noon hour news segment acts like a like real animal
lover as you can see it in his interaction with the pets as he holds
them during the interview.  But when he made that declawing suggestion
he struck me as clueless - perhaps he feels anything to get the
adoption is appropriate. I guess he doesn't know about the cats that
often get dumped back at the shelter when they develop behavioral
problem resulting from the amputation.

Well they got our 2, that's for sure. I'm surprised there wasn't much
of a response in this group.

I have all sorts of software and hardware. Send me the tape and I'll
cap the segment and stick it in some binary newsgroups.

email me at pussycatbeastAThotmail.com if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer but I do have an ATI card that will take care of
the hardware aspect. Unfortunately I don't have the CD that came with
it (I left it at our cottage this summer), so what software do you
recommend (preferably freeware)?

Mailing a tape to the US is a pain in the a.s as you have to declare
all content, footage length of content, total footage spooled etc.
They are so paranoid that somewhere in the middle there may be some
kitty porn.

I'm in Canada. Anyways, if you already have an ATI capture card just
go to the ATI website and get the software to make the card work
again. Simple. Some of the install instructions are convoluted, but it
won't take you more than 30 minutes.

That person should not have said that and I'd can his behind for saying
that. The Humane Society needs to deal with this guy as they are responsible
for him and what he says on the air. They should be shamed of themselves for
allowing it to happen and need to re-educate themselves on what declawing
really is and how it is done. They need to tell the public that it is a bad
practice and not recommended and indeed hurts the cat. I wouldn't support an
organization that recommends declawing. They should be ashamed of themselves
for letting this guy push for declawing on the air especially if it is a
taped show where they have a chance to cut that part out.

Here in the Phoenix area the Arizona Humane Society tapes their adoption
show and it broadcasts a few days later. I have never seen them recommend
declawing but they will point out that if a cat has been declawed that
he/she needs to stay indoors.

Perhaps a campaign calling for the castration of ignorant "news" people
should be started so they don't reproduce!

It was actually a noon news segment with the HS guy on as a guest so
editing was not an option.
