Does anyone know if tuna is a common allergen in cats? Since
Shamrocks last steroid shot 2 months ago, his fur has grown back . He
used to only go about a month before the itching started again so
badly that he would bite himself raw. Today I noticed that he is
biting his tail raw almost like he's trying to chew it off and it
wasn't like that yesterday. He hadn't had any tuna at all in a while
due to some of the posts here; he used to only get some as treats
occasionally but I've cut those treats out altogether. I recently
bought Petreet which has a tuna and rice (can says 50% tuna) and he
scarfs it down. I was happy he likes two of the Petreet flavors, the
tuna and rice and the chicken and rice because the ingredient list
(hold your flames about ingredients, guys) is very small and it has
good meat content and no corn or wheat grains. I started getting
worried about the high tuna content. Then today with the severe
itching and biting, there may be a link here. I'm going to get the
feral into the vet tomorrow so I'll see if she can see Shamrock too
but if tuna is a common allergen maybe I've found it finally?? I read
on a vet site that among the common feline allergies that inhalant is
the most common; that came above flea allergy which I find hard to
believe. Food allergy is suppose to be rare but happens, obviously.

Checking records, scratch that. Almost 3 months ago -- June.

Fish is the third most common allergen in cats, following beef and
dairy products. These three combined constitute 89% of all allergies
in cats in the literature.

Wow, thanks! I'm going to try eliminating all fish then, which will
be hard since most food seems to include fish meal (at least that I've
seen). There may be some hope here afterall, thank you.

It's hard to find, CHeryl. I finally found Petguard Premium Feast (must be
THAT flavor) has no fish in it.

I'll get some of that. It's really amazing... when he was breaking
out before, it took so long for the firing-up to calm down. His tail
is healing and while he's still a little itchy, he isn't biting it
right now. I've cut out anything with fish it in so maybe this is
finally the allergen I've been trying to find? It sort of makes sense
since when he first adopted me he was broken out and he was previously
a stray and a good-hearted person was feeding him and maybe was giving
him tuna treats. I was giving tuna treats with the vitamins at med
time when I gave Shadow his meds (so he wasn't left out.. ;)) and cut
that out a little while ago after reading how unhealthy it is and he's
been doing great for longer than I would attribute to his last steroid
shot 3 months ago.

Yup. This is what my vet told me. It was the FIRST thing she nixed when we
were trying to find out if Grant's allergies were to food.

I'll just bet that you buy into that other lie that says milk is bad
for cats! Our Chessie loves his milk as well as his tuna. He gets both
everytime we get the chance to give it to him, and he's healthy as a
horse. You people are completely wacked out if you buy such things.
