Why is cat pulling his hair out?

I have recently adopted an older kitty - he is almost 16.  While he is
grooming, he will often pull out clumps of fur with his teeth.  He has
recently had four teeth extracted and is in early stages of renal
failure.  

Why would he pull his fur out?

You should probably get his thyroid tested. THis can be a sign.
