On December 7, I bought a canister of helium and some mylar balloons,
filled two of them and attached a nylon string which hangs 1 or 2 feet
above the floor. The first pair of balloons is mostly deflated but
still holding up. My male cat is still playing with the string.
Apparently it is a good self motivating activity, which probably can be
enhanced somehow. The balloons already filled with helium can be
purchased from party city for one US dollar each. That's two dollars
for 10 days.

Another nonstandard form of entertainment I have found is an external
microphone. The easiest implementation is in the form of an inexpensive
infant room monitor (results may very, monitors are hit and miss
depending on your environment). You place the receiver outside the door
or window. My cats don't say "thank you" or "that's great" but over the
years, clearly they enjoy hearing sounds from the great outdoors,
exercising their ears. I wouldn't leave home without giving them at
least that much stimulation. I call it "kitty radio".

Take care.

I hate to sound like a wet blanket, but be really careful with string. I got a
bouquet with a mylar ballon for my 31st anniversary (happy anniversary to me)
on Dec. 7, and the cats got pretty wild with it. I can see some serious
tangling/eating of the ribbon if they're alone with it.

My cat Beck cost me $1200 in vet bills after eating a shoelace.  Luckily
my sister noticed it was missing almost immediately so we got a jump
start on treatment, but still $1200 and resectioning his intestines
wasn't any fun.

OTOH my sisters cat could play with a ribbon all day and never think
about eating it.  But you can bet that's been banned after what happened
to Beck.

YMMV, Charlotte

Cats should not be allowed to play with string?

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

And now we enter the dark side, where you can hear anything which
diverts attention from the subject and brings attention to the reply
author. Everything bad is possible, and the most absurd experiences
emerge.

Well for Christ's sake, they can play with the string
if you are at the other end of it and pick it the F up
after the play. Otherwise it can KILL them if they ingest
it. Lions and tigers and bears my a.s.

Pretty much my reply. And for God's sakes, all I was telling the guy was *I*
had a near-miss experience with my cats re: helium balloon ribbon. I usually
pay attention when someone else offers a warning. Mostly because I'm smart
enough to realize my cats aren't immune from danger and I care about them. In
FACT, I always appreciate a heads-up.

And having said and read all that, a very Merry Christmas to us! lol!!

P.S.--I was out of town for a couple of days and called my
husband the second day and asked to speek to Cheeks. (I
make him hold the phone up so she can hear me, honest to
God.) He said "well how funny you should call, because I
can't FIND her." I made him tear the house apart, you know,
"Are you sure you didn't leave the door open? Did you check the
Closet?" The little weasel had torn away all the
heavy-duty packing tape from the hole behind the washer
and gotten out UNDER the house. In the cold. In the dirt.
(I am not sure if she can actually get OUT out from there--
either she can't or she has never found an escape route.)
Thankfully she came back in, but not until 1 am. I had a few
sleepless hours hundreds of miles from home. Kids! ;O)

His headers are altered, too, using a hexedit program. Nothing twollish
about that. ;)

That's so cute. Johnny learned to find headers. And munge his.

Like many people, I grew up thinking a string was one of the greatest
cat toys out there.  Unfortunately I dont have another $1200 for the
next time he opens a draw and helps himself to one, so no strings enter
my house.

Some people can learn lessons from others mistakes, some have to learn
the hard way themselves.

Your money, your cats, do what you like.
John Doe - 20 Dec 2004 00:16 GMT
Keeping your cat in a box would be the ultimate protection.

I am confident there are many hazards worse than a string attached
to a helium balloon (actually, two balloons). Your experience is
different and, however you want to interpret it, does not mean all
play with string is bad.

So far, Kitty very much enjoys playing with a string attached to
helium balloons, and it is good exercise.

Anyone is invited to look me up later to see whether I'm still going
to the trouble to provide him that much self motivated
exercise/entertainment. Feel free to interrupt me at any time in any
group to ask.

Well they do like the cardboard boxes I bring home for them.

Nope, but since my cat will instantly try to eat one, I wont risk it. At
least with a balloon, the string is not lying around for them to chew on
at their pleasure.  As I said, some cats would never dream of eating
it... unfortunately, the first i knew of eating was when he vomited up
pieces of it.  Surgery was the next day.

Exercise for an indoor cat is extremely important.  I use laser
pointers, feathers on sticks, furry mice (which they play fetch with),
and then they entertain themselves playing chase.  I did use strings and
hair ribbons.   I'm sure there are cats out there that have choked to
death on furry mice, brained themselves against a wall chasing a laser
pointer, or suffocated on feathers... luckily my cats dont do that (or
should I say, haven't done that yet).  The point of my posting was that
I, too, grew up thinking strings were the ultimate cat toy, and I nearly
lost my cat because of it.  Simply a cautionary tale to file under the
"who'd of thunk" category.

Well, my cat Argyle (RB) only lived 3 short years because he injested some
plastic or nylon string. We have no idea how he got a hold of it.  The
string wrapped around his intestines and a portion had to be removed, but he
died anyway due to infection :-(  I was about 16 at the time, so I don't
know all the details.
Also, my cat Dash (RB) used to eat that type of ribbon you use to wrap
presents or is on balloons.  I would find it shredded and then later in
vomit around the house.  I banned it from my house after a couple of these
episodes.

There are so many other safe cat toys that will serve the same purpose, I
don't know why you would want to risk it.

All string in every situation? String is forever banned as something
for cats to play with? What if I'm holding on to the string while
playing with the cat?

Since there's nothing left of my original post down here, your reply
is difficult (for me) to put in context.

I was not replying to your original post.  I copied posted under what I was
replying to.  That is the proper way to respond to a post.  Don't know
what's so difficult about that.

No, not "all string in every situation", but just be careful.  I was just
saying there are better options than string.

Yea. If you have any trouble setting it up (the infant room monitors
are picky depending on one's environment), please feel free to ask for
help. My MSN Messenger ID is lshaping hotmail com.

Someday, I would like to find a room monitor which has an earphone
output jack, so I could easily plug it into a powered computer speaker
set. There is a huge difference in sound quality that way.

Good luck. Take care.

As of December 25, Christmas Day, with the balloon/string continuously
available, the level of activity/play has dwindled to not enough IMO.
