I've posted here before so here we go again. I've done ALL the things everyone
here has proposed....nothing has worked. I live near Miami USA...so the fleas
don't die here like up north in the winter. three years ago I had a cat that
had some fleas...I took care and got rid of the fleas...no problem. But with a
longer haired cat I've had here for the past three years I treat him with
Frontline...he doesn't have the problem but apparently brings them in and
leaves em for me to deal with.
so...I'm at the end of my rope. I do laundry each day...wash the sheets in hot
water with strong Tide and bleach...run em in the dryer on hot for an
hour...some of bug the live Thru this! they live in my clothes too. I vacuum
almost everyday...an hour later they're biting me from the floor. As I
said...I've had the exterminators in...they sloshed everything soaking with
whatever and two days later...like they hadn't been here.
Other than getting rid of the cat...I'm at a loss.

I hate to tell you this, butif they are THAT bad, getting rid of the cat is
NOT going to help. You can track fleas in all on your own as well. This
simply does not sound normal to me. Do neighbors have the same problems? Of
course, you could also make the cat a totally indoor cat, but I just don't
think the cat is the problem. Are there bushes or trees near the house? I've
heard in areas where fleas are bad they are in the bushes and trees and you
can actually see them jumping out. They will jump on to you and what ever
you bring in as well.

You need to move if it is that bad. I lived in Miami for three years, and
had sand around
the house, which was on a lake. To stay flea-free (I had two indoor cats) I
had to wash down
the wood floors with a product called "Rid-a-bug" every month. I tracked
them in, there was no
way around it. I was glad to move.

Hey I also lived in Miami (Tiger Ave) and in Hollywood up near the old
military school (long gone) off Hollywood Blvd.

It is! We are night owls. Buddha is out cold making those little "oo,oo"
snores she makes and Cheeks just finished making biscuits on her
lambswool blanket and is curling up. I have work to do through
dawn, I'm afraid ... if I last that long.

What possibly could be that important? Got a deadline for a client?

Yep--overdue for several. I don't sleep regular hours, though,
kind of keep my own schedule.

I miss the food! The Cuban food, mostly! I also enjoyed the Coconut Grove
nightlife, but those days are gone.

I was back in the Grove a few years ago and its *nothing* like the
early eighty's any more. All big hotels and designer gallery malls,
chain restaurants (Hooters for Christ sakes!) etc. There was a bar
called Bananas on Main Hwy beside the Playhouse that had a really good
Latin house band, but it's gone and the Bananas on Commodore is not
the same thing.

It was "slicked up" by 1993.

You were there a few years before me, but seem to have enjoyed some
of the same kinds of things. I don't miss heat!

So, where did you hang out? I had a range of tastes from scuzzy rock
band bars (Crown Liquors on SR7 in N Dade) to Tug Boat Annie's in
Dania (best kept local secret as it was hidden in an industrial boat
yard), Durty Nellies up in Lauderdale, Nick's Bar on Hollywood beach.

Remember that old saw about if you did the '60s right you wouldn't
be able to remember them?
I do recall that I went where the live music was and that nothing looked
familiar during a '93 visit.

Have you tried borax? Sprinkle it into the rugs and bedding. Doesn't
take a lot. And also the corners of wood floors, etc. Basically
anywhere the fleas are really bad.
Borax absorbs moisture, so it dries bugs out - fleas, spiders, etc. It
does tend to dry feet out for a few days, but nothing bad.
Many years ago, we had the problem really bad. You could walk into the
laundry room with white pants and see them jumping on your legs,
easily 20-30 of them. It was horrible. The only way to go in there was
to put on tall boots, hurry, and get back out before the boots warm up
(they are atracted to the heat). We had tried the flea bombs and flea
dips. No help at all.
Then we tried Flea Busters. They came in and put a dry compound into
the floor. They use a machine to pound it in deep, and they guarantee
no fleas for a year as long as you don't wash the floors. It works for
5 years. We went from horrible fleas (finding them on us, in the beds,
etc), to having no fleas at all - in only a couple days. At that time,
it cost about $500 for our house (several rooms with rugs), and we
were very happy with it.
By the time the flease came back, we learned that the compound is
basically borax. We have to do it more often (about 2-4 times a year)
since we can't pound it in deep, but we can do the whole house in less
than an hour for less than $5, and it woks great. We have never had a
flea problem since. If we let it go too long (about 5-6 months), we
will start seeing evidence of fleas. A quick treatment with borax, and
they are gone again in a couple days.
We have been doing this now for about 10-12 years, and we have never
had any problem. We have cats and dogs as well as turtles that roam
the house. This is Seattle, WA where we rarely have a hard winter and
we gets lots of moisture.
If you haven't tried it, i would give it a try. Borax can be purchased
at the grocery store, with the laundry detergents. Don't go overboard.
Sprinkle it lightly and sweep it into the rugs. Put it in the bedding
or wherever the cat sleeps or the fleas seem to be bad. Wait a few
days and vacuum it up. You should see some improvement within a couple
days.

I recognize you, welcome back.:) Sorry you are stll having a problem.
I live in Texas and, while not as bad as Florada, we also have fleas
year round.
My next suggestion is to add an insect growth regulator ( IGR).
Program (lufenuron) is added to the cats food once a month and keeps
the new fleas from laying viable eggs before the Frontline or
Advantage can kill them. The combined treatment is recommended until
the fleas are under control. You can also have your vet give your cat
a shot of Program which lasts six months. That should be about $40+-.
With only one cat, that's what I would do.

There is a product sold by DrsFosterSmith.com that is designed to spray
the area around the house to kill fleas and ticks. A dispenser attaches
to a garden hose to work. It is called Adams Yard Spray.

The poster from Miami should perhaps really consider this if they are
practically jumping out of the bushes on you.

I checked the site. You would have to keep the cat inside after
treating until the product has dried. It would be even safer to wait
until after the next rain. The toll free number for Doctors Foster &
Smith is 1-800-826-7206.
