Training an Older Cat to Use a Litter Box?

I am looking for suggestions on how to train a young adult cat to use a
litter box indoors this winter, instead of doing his business outdoors.

My wife and I adopted (or were adopted by) a semi-stray cat in our
neighborhood this Summer.  A nearby family had been minimally looking after
this cat until now, and told us that the cat would use a litter box if
needed.  As the weather in our area has turned colder, we have been keeping
our new cat indoors during the night.  So far, we haven't seen any evidence
that the cat is inclined to use his litter box.  Instead, he prefers to go
outside, usually at 2-3:00 AM, and wakes us up to let him out.  So far,
there have been no 'accidents' in our house.

The cat is 2-4 years old, as nearly as anyone can guess.  He has been
neutered.  He prefers to be outside during the day, and spends the majority
of his time sleeping on our back deck. We own a house, and have tried
placing the litter box in both a basement utility room, and in a bathroom.
We have shown the cat his box on numerous occasions, without results.  We
have tried brands of litter that claim to attract cats, and we have even
seeded his box with a few samples of  his feces so that he would identify
the litter box as his, and get a clue about its purpose.

I would greatly appreciate constructive suggestions about other approaches
we might try.

You might try putting the box by the door he usually goes out when he begs
to go out.

He's probably used to dirt not litter.  Put some dirt over the litter in the
litter box. Gradually reduce the amount of dirt after as he gets used to
using the litter box.

Yup.. this would be my first suggestion too.. there is a product out there
called cat attract that is supposed to help attract cats to litter.  Don't
know why, but they say it works.

I would mix litter and dirt in a box and put it on the deck (so he could use
it and get used to going in a box) and put another just like it by the door
he goes out and one in the place you really want the box to be eventually.
Show him them all. If you can find where he likes to go outside, put some of
his poo actually IN the box on the deck so he gets the idea. I bet he will
begin to choose the inside box when it gets really bad weather. Our cats
used to *come in* fromo outside to use the cat box, and go back out again!

He has you trained, why should he use the litter? I bet if you don't let
him out for a while, he would eventually use the litter. I took in a
stray pregnant female who I refused to let out of the house until after
I had her spayed. She had a couple of  accidents but when she saw my
other cat using the litter then the light bulb went on for her - no more
problems. Her kittens were another story, they liked to pee down the
heating duct.

I have known people who sprinkle red pepper in the tub and it keeps the
cats out.
