"Wake up, and smell the cat food" -TMBG
Yes, she gets WHISKAS & FRISKIES - the small 100g pouch versions. I
try giving her the healthy vet foods but she won't touch them.
With the change in her condition I add quite a bit of water now.
Fortunately she is happy to lap up the water-component tinged with the
meat gravy and the lactulose I give her.
MAGI has never been a cat big on dried food - she'll give them the odd
crunch but she's not like BISCUIT who is totally into dried biscuit
food and will touch little else.
There was no blood in the urine but when the sheets dried out there
was a dark ring inside the dried urine patch but it was not pink or
red in colour. I assume this was just normal waste components of the
urine.
The antibiotics do seem to have done the trick! Otherwise I'd be
taking her back to the vet today.
She is no longer spotting and last night she had stopped 'spotting' in
the living room. This morning I allowed her into the bedroom and she
made no attempt to jump onto the bed to mark it. I left the door open
and later went. She was lying on the bed and when I moved her and took
a look it was fine.
So, so far, everything looks fine. I just need to go out and buy some
new bedding and we'll be dumping the couch as it was a fabric-type
one. To tell the truth, it needed replacing anyway!!!
I looked up some alternate treatments and one of the options offered
was cranberry juice which is supposed to be top-notch for UTI's. Has
anyone any experience of 'cranberry'ing their cat?' It may not be
necessary if the problem does not re-occur but I'd imagine some
cranberry concentrate in a small syringe-feeding session would have
helped?
Plain yogurt was also offered as an option in order to create friendly
bacteria to force the hostile cystitis bacteria out. I'd see no
problem there as MAGI gets excitable at the thought of double-cream
anyway, so it'd be a simple matter to mix some together.
Of course, all of this is followed-up immediately (and during) by a
treat of course! Everything we do for MAGI is within a transactional
relationship!!! She is a tough little negotiator and will do nothing -
take her medicine, her lactulose, her supplements, clip her nails,
groom her, take her to the vet, unless there is a meaty treat
involved. Mind you, she is getting to like grooming without needing a
distracting treat ...

The canned food I use, Wellness, contains cranberries. I don't know if it's
available in the UK. I don't know what effect this has had on Bartleby, but
he hasn't had any urinary issues while on Wellness. If Wellness isn't
available, check out some other natural cat foods, they might have
cranberries.

I also mix in a few spoonfuls of plain, low-fat yogurt into the Wellness. I
started doing this when one of the cat's had diarrhea, and just kept it up
as a preventative measure.
I'm very glad to hear Magi is doing well!

That combination of cranberry and yogurt seems to have worked for
BARNABY since they are meant to displace unfriendly bacteria in the
urinary tract.
MAGI has had no re-occurrence and so it seems a one-off nipped in the
bud. All the same I tried the cran-yog combo in a bit of double cream
and she took to it kind of OK. I've gave her this in small amounts
morning and night but I'll stop from tomorrow and see how she goes. It
was a good way to get her in some extra calories though.

No idea for cats, but I unfortunately had a history of UTIs when I was
younger. They suck. I drink cranberry juice as a preventative measure, and
it does seem to help. If I think I'm feeling one "coming on," I drink extra
amounts of cranberry juice *and* make sure to drink lots of water, as well.
Not sure how my experiences relate to cats, though.

I'm not sure that we are all that different to tell the truth - I mean
from the perspective that we (humans & cats) are mammals. Internally
the tubing and organs and biochemistry and hormones are much the same.
So with regards to cranberry I'd guess that what worked for a human
would in all likelihood work for a cat.
That is up to a point, of course!
