MAGI TO THE VET

Hi,

Please wish my cat MAGI luck today in going to the vet!

Last night she started to leave little spots and trailing spots of
urine on the couch and on the bed.

It's the first time she has ever done this.

According to the information I quickly web-researched it's either
marking or a UTI or UT blockage. At 5 this morning I woke up to hear
her yelping in the living room but when I picked her up she was OK. I
think she wanted something to eat so I gave her an early breakfast and
she was fine.

Shortly afterwards she jumped onto bed and did a little spot of urine,
jumped off and went to her litter tray then came back and did it
again. My other half got up to go to work and said she was also
'spotting' on the couch in the living room.

Her behaviour also seems to have changed. Though this over the last
week or so. Previously she was a moderately active but quiet cat. Now
she is quite bouncy and more skitterish than usual - we were thinking
then that her has come on very well and she was becoming more of a
cat. MAGI is a portal-systemic shunt affected cat and is largely
treated with lactulose and anti-ammonia supplementation.

If it is marking then we figure that since she shares the house with
two other cats BISCUIT & JADE she is now 'coming out of herself' and
starting to be more assertive. As you can imagine though doing it in
this particular way could present problems.

However, if it is illness then it is something else. She is not in
pain but does look a little more pensive and staring into space than
usual. She had been slightly damaged by the early years of her illness
and treatment and is partially-sighted.

Actually when I ask you to wish her luck I should ask that you wish
the vet luck too!!! MAGI can be quite terrifying when starngers are
near her and especially so when the stranger is wearing a white
coat!!!

Healing wishes for everyone. I hope it is something very small that
can be rectified easily. She is lucky you love her so much and take good
care of her.

Hi,

Took MAGI to the vet - not her usual vet as yesterday and today are
neutering days at the rescue centre.

The vet said it was CYSTITIS and injected her with CLAMOXYL LA and
DEXADRESEN.

By last night she was much relieved and had stopped 'spotting' however
this morning she is 'spotting' again! :-( She jumped into bed to say
'good-morning' and left me with more of her current 'good-mornings'
than I wanted!!!

The vet did say if it did not work then to bring her back on
Wednesday. So this looks likely but she has another day to go.

In the meantime I have isolated her in the bathroom area with a
running bathtap tap trickling water into a bowl, a cleaned-up toilet
tray and a comfy-box that she likes to sleep in along with a bowl of
wet food.

I'm at work today but tomorrow we also need to do the big clean up.
She preferred the bed and the couch but I expect with the urgency the
cystitis gave her she probably 'spotted' onto the carpets as well. So
we are throwing out the bedding, etc and getting the couch cleaned and
the floors.

Our lovely little madam will be residing in the bathroom until this is
sorted out though.

I'm trying to figure out how she got it and my first theory is that
since MAGI is on lactulose an over-runny toilet may have infected her
by accient. So if this is so, I need to tighten up and take more care
of the lactulose-giving.

Has anybody experience of dealing with this kind of infection in a
female cat? I'd appreciate any advice. There was a suggestion I read
that cystitis was viral in nature so I'm not sure what effect and
antibiotic may actually have.

I've never had this in female cat, but my Bartleby had become blocked
several times a few years ago.  Does Magi get canned food?  This will
increase her water intake and keep her from becoming blocked.  Have you seen
any blood in her urine?  I hope she's feeling better soon.

Yes, she gets WHISKAS & FRISKIES - the small 100g pouch versions. I
try giving her the healthy vet foods but she won't touch them.

With the change in her condition I add quite a bit of water now.
Fortunately she is happy to lap up the water-component tinged with the
meat gravy and the lactulose I give her.

MAGI has never been a cat big on dried food - she'll give them the odd
crunch but she's not like BISCUIT who is totally into dried biscuit
food and will touch little else.

There was no blood in the urine but when the sheets dried out there
was a dark ring inside the dried urine patch but it was not pink or
red in colour. I assume this was just normal waste components of the
urine.

The antibiotics do seem to have done the trick! Otherwise I'd be
taking her back to the vet today.

She is no longer spotting and last night she had stopped 'spotting' in
the living room. This morning I allowed her into the bedroom and she
made no attempt to jump onto the bed to mark it. I left the door open
and later went. She was lying on the bed and when I moved her and took
a look it was fine.

So, so far, everything looks fine. I just need to go out and buy some
new bedding and we'll be dumping the couch as it was a fabric-type
one. To tell the truth, it needed replacing anyway!!!

I looked up some alternate treatments and one of the options offered
was cranberry juice which is supposed to be top-notch for UTI's. Has
anyone any experience of 'cranberry'ing their cat?' It may not be
necessary if the problem does not re-occur but I'd imagine some
cranberry concentrate in a small syringe-feeding session would have
helped?

Plain yogurt was also offered as an option in order to create friendly
bacteria to force the hostile cystitis bacteria out. I'd see no
problem there as MAGI gets excitable at the thought of double-cream
anyway, so it'd be a simple matter to mix some together.

Of course, all of this is followed-up immediately (and during) by a
treat of course! Everything we do for MAGI is within a transactional
relationship!!! She is a tough little negotiator and will do nothing -
take her medicine, her lactulose, her supplements, clip her nails,
groom her, take her to the vet, unless there is a meaty treat
involved. Mind you, she is getting to like grooming without needing a
distracting treat ...

The canned food I use, Wellness, contains cranberries.  I don't know if it's
available in the UK.  I don't know what effect this has had on Bartleby, but
he hasn't had any urinary issues while on Wellness.  If Wellness isn't
available, check out some other natural cat foods, they might have
cranberries.

I also mix in a few spoonfuls of plain, low-fat yogurt into the Wellness.  I
started doing this when one of the cat's had diarrhea, and just kept it up
as a preventative measure.

I'm very glad to hear Magi is doing well!

That combination of cranberry and yogurt seems to have worked for
BARNABY since they are meant to displace unfriendly bacteria in the
urinary tract.

MAGI has had no re-occurrence and so it seems a one-off nipped in the
bud. All the same I tried the cran-yog combo in a bit of double cream
and she took to it kind of OK. I've gave her this in small amounts
morning and night but I'll stop from tomorrow and see how she goes. It
was a good way to get her in some extra calories though.

No idea for cats, but I unfortunately had a history of UTIs when I was
younger.  They suck.  I drink cranberry juice as a preventative measure, and
it does seem to help.  If I think I'm feeling one "coming on," I drink extra
amounts of cranberry juice *and* make sure to drink lots of water, as well.

Not sure how my experiences relate to cats, though.

I'm not sure that we are all that different to tell the truth - I mean
from the perspective that we (humans & cats) are mammals. Internally
the tubing and organs and biochemistry and hormones are much the same.

So with regards to cranberry I'd guess that what worked for a human
would in all likelihood work for a cat.

That is up to a point, of course!
