Why doesn't he knead?

Francis, my approx. 4 month old kitten who was handed to me at 4 weeks
is the sweetest cuddliest little guy (when he's not dashing around
grabbing ankles and trying to bite), but he does not knead.  Sometimes I
see him curling his feet in pleasure, but that's it.

Can anyone speculate (reasonably) why?

Seems like Oscar kneads to reassure herself.  Maybe Francis is just so
self-assured he doesn't need that sissy kneading kitty-meditation technique?

Okay, maybe that's not reasonable.

Shamrock doesn't knead either. He sometimes tries to, but instead he
just shifts his weight from one foot to the other. He came to me at
about a year old. I don't know his history other than that someone
fed him and he was a stray, and they had to move and turned him in to
a local rescue group because he was just too friendly to be a feral.

Nope; I wondered the same about Demelza, & she never told me why she didn't
knead when younger.  She now does, but she didn't start to do it till she
was a few years old.

I think some cats just don't. We have three cats and only one kneads, although
one of the others will sometimes stand on my husband's chest and shift her
weight from one paw to the other a couple times without lifting them, which I
guess is her way of kneading. She doesn't curl her paws though.

Our third cat is an stray we took in last year, and I've never seen her knead
or make any action similar to kneading.

Kneading is the way nursing kittens stimulate milk flow, so I presume some
kittens grow out of the behavior and some don't.

I've had one in three as well. My first cat, Fiona,  would knead, and
I come sometimes get her to do it on my back (great massage).

Maynard was the runt of his litter of 8 kittens, so he was hand fed
right from the first day. He got a little bit of mom's milk, but she
was tiny and couldn't support 8 kittens. We had to hand feed 3 of them
to make sure they got enough. Maynard thinks he is a human. I don't
think I have ever witnessed him knead, and he is 18 years old now.

Kira is 10 years old.  I believe she was 10 or 11 weeks old when
weaned. She has shown slight hints of it, but not much. Ocasionally, I
will see her do it a couple times, usually in the air. Nothing like
Fiona did.

same here with Lancelot. He did not knead until he was about 10 months
old. His favorite thing to knead is the pillows.

Squeaky didn't knead at first. He was abandoned and/or feral. We adopted
each other, and for a while he was quite timid. He would tumble at my
feet for petting, but didn't knead or purr. In my diary I noted when he
first dared to purr. After a couple of months he also kneaded. He now
kneads vigorously.

I think it's timidity, and in Squeaky's case from wildness. Keep giving
Francis love and reassurances.

Oh, he's not timid in the slightest.  He's confident I'm his Mom,
playing on and around me, snuggling up at the smallest opportunity,
sleeping up against my face where my breath will warm him.  My mother
just arrived for the holiday, and he took to her immediately, too,
settling down on her shoulder as she reclined on the couch.  A very
sweet cuddly boy (when he's not disemboweling his toys).  Maybe it'll
show up later, or maybe he'll never knead.  He's fine, but I was curious
about this aberation.
