Well, thanks all for letting me vent. The regular vet is closed on Saturdays,
so I took the little mite to the local vet (yes, Phil, the cow vet--it's the
best I could do today). He got eye ointment, antibiotics. They got some Hills
A/D and a syringe--and he started eating and has been eating ever since. He
just didn't *know* how to eat. I still can't get him to eat out of a bowl, but
he's eating. He was not dehydrated. They theorized that his mother abandoned
him since he's weaning size. That's why he was out by himself. Hopefully he
will continue to improve over the weekend and we'll get him into see the
companion animal vet we usually use for a real diagnoses on the eye problem. I
just hope it isn't herpes or chlymidia or something bad We're keeping him
isolated and I'm trying to really wash my hands good every time I handle him.
You can already tell he feels better. He's cute. Take a look at the size of his
feet.

What a little sweetie! I bet he's going to be a big kitty. Hope the eyes
clear up soon. The last litter I had came in with horrible conjuctivitis,
their eyes were all crusted shut. In just a couple days, they were fine.
It's amazing what a little TLC will do :-)

Sherry,
Those photos sure look like herpes to me. If it is it's probably not
going to be a big deal provided you get a handle on it immediately. I
would get this kitten on Lysine *today.* If you can get t in capsule
form it's better, but if not just pulverize a pill and mix it in with
his a/d. I would do 250 mg 2x a day.

Where do you find Lysine? I have a foster who had a herpes infection in his
eye when we rescued him. He has a ruptured globe and it appears that the 3rd
eyelid is adhered to the site of the infection. The iris came forward to the
rupture and is now protruding. We need to get the protrusion down and the
eye healed or he will lose it. Do you think the Lysine would help at this
late date? The vet put him on Clavamox and Terramycin. He was just checked
by the vet again last Friday and he said the infection seems to be under
control but he wanted him kept on the antibiotics another 4 days (14 days
total). It's pretty certain that he's lost most if not all of the vision in
that eye but I really hope we can do something to avoid him losing it
altogether.

Definitely do the Lysine (forever) which is available at any health food
store, and even Walmart, but MORE important is to tell your vet to get
this cat on IDU (idoxuridine) eyedrops PRONTO!!!! This is an *antiviral*
drug that is especially necessary with what you decribe and you cannot
afford to wait any longer. Antibiotics aren't going to cut it and you
need to do something NOW. If you have a veterinary opthamologist
anywhere near get in to see one immediately. When it comes to eye
issues, regular vets often just aren't educated enough and if you
continue to just use antibiotics your cat probably will lose his eye.

Get a brand called Twin Labs from Safeway. They have 500mg capsules,
and most everywhere else I can only seem to find tablets.

> Where do you find Lysine?
Any health food store should have it, usually in capsule form. Break
the capsule and mix the powder into the food.
> I have a foster who had a herpes infection in his eye when we rescued
> him. [...] Do you think the Lysine would help at this late date?
Lysine always helps. It isn't a cure; it works by inhibiting the virus
from multiplying, so Lysine is critical to control.
> The vet put him on Clavamox and Terramycin.
The Clavamox will be of limited usefulness, if any at all. Antibiotics
have *no* direct impact on a virus (like herpes). They may help to
control secondary infections, but there again, many ABs spcifically do not
work with eye infections because the molecules are too big to pass through
the membranes to reach the infection. The oral AB of choice in this
regard is Doxycycline.
In any event, follow Megan's advice ASAP. IDU drops are essential for
viral infections. The kitten should be put on them immediately. Finish
the AB course if you must, but don't lay any great store by it. And if
the vet still talks ABs and only ABs, find another vet.

Do they remain on the Lysine indefinitely, or just till the infection clears

Scarlett and Rhett have been on it the last two weeks that I've had
them. I have always heard two weeks, and even when their eyes
cleared, I kept it up for the two weeks (which is today). I was
very worried about Scarlett's eyes the first couple of days, and
she had the tell-tale bulging eyes (swelling around the eye
sockets) and some pus so the vet prescribed clavamox, but no eye
gunk. Cleaning the eyes, lysine, ABs and good food seems to have
cleared them up. Oh, and antihistamines for sneezing/runny nose.

I understand herpes is very common in kittens. Bootsie had it (only hers didn't
affect her eyes)....I read about the Lysine back then, but she has never had
another outbreak. I've often wondered if it was a wrong diagnosis. I've been
extra diligent not to expose him to the others, and done a lot of handwashing.
But Frank can't wait to get in that bedroom. He can hear the kitten. He loves
babies.

I think a lot of that depends on the cat, the severity of the infection,
and the environment the cat will live in. Herpes never goes away and
when problems clear up that only means the virus goes into hibernation.
Stress can cause the virus to come back and symptoms to emerge, so for
cats with a severe initial infection doing a low maintenance dose of
250mg once a day is an easy way to minimize/prevent flare-ups.

Oh no :-( I'm not sure if he's better than nothing - at least for cats.
>He got eye ointment, antibiotics.
Make sure the ointment doesn't contain corticosteroids just in case the
kitten has rhino (herpesvirus). Steroids might predispose him to ulcerative
keratitis.
They got some
Hills

S.D. Kitten (a/k/a Feline Growth) would be a better choice. S.D. Kitten is
more nutrient/caloric dense than a/d. In addition to more protein, Kitten
also contains more calcium which is essential for his growing bones. Its
also readily available in pet stores.

Its absolutely imperative to keep him eating and well hydrated.

Herpesvirus is manageable and with lysine and supportive care not a major
threat. Chlamydiosis is unlikely - not very common. The vaccine produces
worse side effects than Chlamydiosis itself! So don't even think about it
unless your in a high risk situation.
