This cat has a problem with constipation.  He's had to go to the vet twice
now for expensive $100 enemas.  He's on special canned food as directed and
being encouraged to drink water but it keeps happening.  Is there a home
remedy for this?
Thanks.

Is a long haired cat?  If so do you brush him/her?  You can give Petromalt
for hairballs (but it also helps the stool to exit easier.)  Occasionally
you can give very small amounts of mineral oil when they are having the
constipation problem.  Is this an every day thing problem?

It's just started happening, he's been to the vet 3 times now for this
problem.  He's medium haired and gets brushed a bunch.  No, it's not an
every day problem but something that seems to be recurring now.
Thank you.

Jean,
One of my cats has had megacolon for 4 years. Two supplements that have
helped her tremendously are Ester C and B 12 (methylcobalamin form). I
also give her lactulose, Chinese meds, and SubQ fluids which have worked
well for her.

Of all the above I believe the B12 has been the most helpful. She has
not had an episode since last spring when I added the B 12. I learned
about the 2 vitimins on the feline megacolon newsgroup.

If your cat also has chronic renal failure DO NOT use the Ester C but
the B12 is not a problem for CRF cats.

One of the vet techs at my holistic vet's was thrilled with the results
when she used the Ester C for her megacolon cat. Now my holistic vet is
passing along the info I have learned from the people on the feline
megacolon newsgroup.

I hope they work as well for your boy as they do for Patches.

Thank you for all your replies.  The vet cleaned him out again yesterday.
She thinks he is developing megacolon.  He gets brushed a lot and is on a
special diet of soft food morning and night, yogurt and pumpkin snack at
noon.
I'll try all these things and check out the newsgroup you mentioned.

I forgot to ask, how much B12, how often, etc?
Thanks.

Jean,
What is currently working for Patches is 2 1000 mcg pills 2 times a day
of the B 12 methlycoblamin form. It has to be the methly form. Most B 12
pills are not. I had to go to a whole health store where I live. I have
not found it in any of the major chains stores or pharmacies. You can
find sources on the web if you need to.

Also the one I get is the sublingual form but it works whether she keeps
it under her tongue (wouldn't you like to see that!) or swallows it.

I hope this helps your boy. I know has distressful this condition can be
to both of you. It is managable most of the time if you find the right
combination.
