hi..

my cat only wants to drink from the tub, i'm trying to find something
that will refresh the water, i've seen a fountain and other stuff, but
it has filters which ultimatly will lead to more germs becouse they
aggregate all the filth,
i've seen this thing:
http://www.kittenkaboodle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?store_code=KK&screen=PROD&pr
oduct_code=DRPI00005

and wondered if anyone has tried it, or if anyone knows of a water
dispensers which does not have a filters in it, but does mix the
water.

You can run either the Drinkwell or the Petmate fountains without the
filters.  They're not neccessary for the unit to work.  The filters DO work,
however.  I clean my two Drinkwell fountains once a week.  I rinse the
filters in cold water, and change them every 2 months.  Mostly it's just cat
hair that gets trapped in them.  When I had the Petmate fountain I ran out
of filters a couple of times and just let it run for a week without one.

That's exactly what I'm doing right now.  I have 3 of the Drinkwell
Fountains, and the filters were cruddier (they're pretty good at filtering
out the food particles and cat hair that land in a waterdish) than usual
when I washed the fountains this past Monday, and I didn't have any more
(can't buy them locally around here, have to order them), so I am running
them without until my order arrives.  Only I change the filters once every 6
weeks, and wash the fountains every week (they get run through the
dishwasher after completely dissassembled and pump/motore removed) on
Monday.

How do you take the pump/motor out?  I would love to run mine thru the
dishwasher!  That's the one thing I don't like about the Drinkwell fountain,
it's a PITA to clean.
BTW- the filter are just aquarium filters.  You can buy them at any pet
supply store.

If you turn it upside-down, twist the motor toward you (its
threaded where it connects to the Drinkwell). The first time is a
little hard to turn it, and it's a bit awkward. If you've never
removed it before, you'll be surprised by what you see. The
propeller comes out, too.

Same here. But a bottle washer does the trick to get in the nooks
and crannies. I tried putting it in the dishwasher, but it really
needs to be scrubbed.

Good to know. Thanks!

I have a document in .pdf format that I downloaded from the Drinkwell web
site, it give all the details of disassembly & cleaning.  If you want, I can
email it to you, or you can download it yourself at www.petfountain.com.

A lot of people say that the filters are just aquarium filters, but most
aquarium filters I've looked at are rectangular in shape (all four corners
squared better than any corner in my house (LOL) ), while the drinkwell
filters are slightly narrower at the end that goes in at the bottom than at
the top.  I've never actually tried them, not wanting to force an
ill-fitting filter in the filter spot.

I bought a bunch of filters on line about five years ago (I guess it's about
that long) when we got the Drinkwell. They are exactly like the one that came
with the Drinkwell, but they are labeled as aquarium filters. I've never tried
looking at say, Petsmart, for aquarium filters to fit, and I don't remember
where we bought the filters, although I'm down to my last three so I have to
start looking.

Just bought a new Drinkwell because the original one was starting to sound
funny and the water coming out was down to just a trickle, so I figured it was
giving up the ghost. Maybe the motor just needed cleaning, I don't know. I've
always tried to clean it with a toothbrush, but that doesn't get inside very
far. The new Drinkwell says to use an aquarium brush to clean out the motor so
I'll have to look for one of those. I'd never have thought of that, but maybe
those kinds of brushes are the right size.

They are the right size.  I have fish tanks, so I have many brushes on
hand and the smaller brushes work fine.  I use one to get inside the
motor after I remove the impeller.  That way ,I never remove the motor.

I ordered some filters online once, and they also said aquarium filters but
were the same size/shape as the official Drinkwell filters.  I'm going to
need more filters soon and I think I'll try Petco, since I don't need any
other supplies and hate paying ridiculous shipping charges just for filters.

The motor in the Drinkwell at work has been making some weird sounds lately.
The other day it was making a sucking noise, like there wasn't enough water
in the bowl and it was sucking air.  The bowl was full so I stuck my finger
in by the intake, in case it was blocked with hair or something.  The water
trickle stopped completely.  I unplugged it & plugged it back in but the
motor wouldn't work.  I emptied & cleaned it and then refilled it, and the
motor started up again.  I still hear the sucking noise at times and I'm
hoping it doesn't die.  I can never get inside the motor to clean it, and
have never heard of an aquarium brush.  Another thing to look for...

Our local Petco sells the Drinkwell filters.  Definately save yourself
$10 in shipping costs...

Two of my cats also love to drink out of my very hot bath water and I can't
understand it.  I give them fresh  water with their meals.  I'll be away now
for 5 days and I will leave a bowl of water in the bathroom sink with water
slowly dripping into it as well as having a pet sitter giving them fresh
water.  Doing this has resulted in my youngest cat always wanting to play
with dripping water!

Of course I don't look busy,
I did it right the first time.

Hmmm.  You're supposed to change the filters every few months so, as
long as you're doing that, I don't think contamination is really much
of an issue.  And, considering that the fountains live on the floor,
the water ends up with dust and other fuzzies in it that the filters
catch.  I personally wouldn't think of using my Drinkwell (or *any*
fountain) without a filter, but to each his own...

This waterer is meant to hook up to an outside hose. We have two of
these for our guineas and outside creatures. The drinkwell fountains
that others mention are what you should get and just run it without the
filter.

For all of you looking for filters - check your neighborhood Walmart.
Thats where I get mine, near the cat stuff.
