Odd scratching fetish

My white spayed female double clawed 4 yr old has always loved to
scratch at shiny flat surfaces. She goes nuts on a magazine cover or
any shiny package. She will go at it for a couple of minutes
sometimes. She looks like she is trying to clear a space to use a
litter box but fortunately that's as far as she goes. She will
occasionally scratch the carpet when she's excited but flat shining
surfaces are her favorite.

Is this common?

The cat I had for 20 years did this all the time. It was hilarious.
Like your cat she loved magazine covers and would seem to
bliss out while she was doing it. Sometimes she did it to
windows, too.

Biskit does this! She digs in the bathtub, digs on the storm door, on
magazines, windows. She even gets up on the back of the couch and digs on a
picture that's on the wall. This gets on Bootsie's nerves bigtime. She glares
at her, finally gets enough, and runs over and smacks her off the couch. It's
like she's saying, "What the HELL are you doing, you stupid idiot??"
