Laxatone question

My boy, who blocked for urine once a year ago, presented the same
symptoms.  So we went off to the vet immediately; she stated he was
blocked with feces, not urine.   He has stopped horking hairballs, which
he used to do on a weekly basis.  And he's also trying to gobble my
kitten's chow instead of his SD-cd.

So the vet gave me a tube of Laxatone to give him... in the amount of
1/2-1 tsp for 2-3 days, then 1/4-1/2 tsp. 2-3 times a week.   Well...

Now I have Laxatone all over the entire house; the tile, the carpet, the
sofa & chairs, etc.... all because I've been rubbing it onto the top of
his paw and also tried smearing it on the bottom of his paw, along with
using his foreleg.   The box said to use the paw or nose.   Their nose??
Who are they kidding!?

PLEASE... does anyone use this product?   Please... _where_ is the best
place to smear it on a cat so they can reach the area to lick it off
themselves... BUT... at the same time, not "fling" it everywhere when
they shake the "offending" limb.

I thank you, my carpet thanks you and my hairy guy will eventually thank
you. :)

We buy the liquid, Lactulose, from the pharmacy. You put the liquid in a
syringe (without needle of course) and put it in the side of the cat's mouth
and slowly squeeze, while they lick away. Our cat hates this, but she will
not eat the paste.

Oh, Linda- been there, had that!!! Know just what you mean! Have you tried
putting it on the roof of his mouth? Even several smaller doses than one great
gob? Squeeze some on your finger, grab the back of his neck with one hand,
slide the finger into his reluctant mouth. The stuff is supposed to taste okay,
so maybe he'll put up with that. Good luck!!

I put it on my finger--just a small glob at first, and tried to get her to
lick it. When she did not, I just touched it to her nose, and she licked
it off. Then she went for more. It smells like molasses. Gnarly loved it.
You have to have patience--you can't just try to shove a glob of it
down their throat.

I did exactly that the first few times I dosed my cat; then she found she
liked the
taste of it. After that, I just fedit to her.

FEED it to your cat, off of your fingers.

Hi Linda,

Try rubbing the Laxatone on his belly - far down enough for him to reach
it..  Rub it in good so the dab doesn't fall off.

Jade curls up like a shrimp to lick off every drop.

Pudge used to do that. I would rub it on the roof of the cat's mouth.
(The veterinarian recommended that.)

I've also used Pounce Hairball treats. They do seem to work.

I tried to smear it on Ike's (RB) paw one time.  He shook his paw and
the stuff went right in my eye.  After that, I would put it higher on
his leg so he couldn't shake it hard enough to shake it off.

My Nanette tends to get all bollixed up with hairballs. she can't pass
them from either end. the vet has me give her about an inch of
Laxatone every day. I put it on the front of her leg above the bend in
the foot. I guess we would say the shin. Works fine for us. sometimes
it might get get somewhere else but very rarely. they can be little
buggers, can't they?

My cats always loved that.  I had a Siamese years ago that would lie in my
arms like a baby and hold the tube in her two paws and suck it like a
bottle!

Of course I don't look busy,
I did it right the first time.

I just put some on Meep's canned food, she eats it right up.

What am I missing here?  Everybody's talking about wiping it on
various portions of the cat's anatomy; my vet just told me to
top-dress her canned food, which is what I do, and she eats it right
up.

I kind of feel the same way, as my vet just said feed it to her, and
if she balks put a little at a time on her nose so she has to lick it off.

Pudge loathed Laxatone. LOATHED it. I could never figure out why.

Hodge, on the other hand, will eat anything.

I smear it directly onto the roof of their mouths.  Provided they don't lick
it off my finger (which some cats will do, if you're lucky).  Haven't gotten
bitten yet.

Since we switched to Iams Hairball the cat doesn't seem to require
Petromalt or Laxatone.  When I used to use it, I just let her lick it off
the end of the tube -- she considered it a treat.MLB

Thanks, everyone!  :)   All of you gave wonderful suggestions... but as
I hated to rub that dark brown, molasses-looking-icky-stuff onto my
boy's lovely white belly or legs, I took a chance... I got my whip and
lion-tamers chair out... and viola!  Stuck a glob of it on my finger
(boy, that stuff runs fast!), put my finger in his mouth and swabbed it
onto the roof of his mouth.   heh... he didn't know what to do...
started backing up like a truck and realized the stuff was still in his
mouth.  He swallowed it but it definately looked like he wanted to puke.
lol...  I hope he ends up liking the stuff, but I kinda doubt it.   :)

Thanks again!

My cats don't like Laxatone or the other brands.  But it's only
flavored petroleum jelly.  I smear a little vaseline on the front of
his "forearm", and he licks it off to clean himself.  It has no
flavor at all.

Get Petromalt, that is not as runny or molasses-ey.  It is easier to
keep on your finger while you get his mouth open.   That works better
for us.
