What is the perfect litterbox??
Multiple cats (two)
controls tracking
helps control odor
easy to clean
I'm curious, if there are any better solutions then what ie typically
found at Petco.

The deepest one you can find that is owned by someone who uses quality
scoopable litter and scoops it frequently.

Four litter boxes ( one more litter box than cats and one spare),I buy
deep storage containers from walmart for about $5, and keep one box as a
rotating spare when I wash a box.
A friend is raving about a box she was given that the cat enters from the
top. She says it really controls tracking. I haven't seen it, but this
may be it: http://www.hdw-inc.com/clevercat.htm
I'd try it but it's too expensive for me.
I've switched back to The World's Best litter. It clumps solid, is
lighter than clay litter and is completely flushable, unlike the clays.
With up to a dozen cats at any one time, flushable is very important to
me and TWB disintegrates rapidly in water.
Solid clumps help prevent odor.

as recommended by someone in this group, i went to home depot and got a
mortar mixing tray. it's the only box in the house and
4 cats use it without complaint. we use whatever clumping litter happens to
be on sale, they all seem to be about the same.

That might have been me. I have two large cats, and no room for a
second box.
I use a mortar-mixing tray from Home Depot, which is 26" x 19" and
6" deep, and very sturdy plastic like a litterbox. I think it cost
about five dollars.
The sides slope out from the bottom, which solved the problem of
one cat backing up to the end or corner of the box, and managing to
pee over the edge half the time. Before, I had a litterbox inside a
plastic storage bin, but it was very messy to clean up the escaped
urine in the outer box (storage bins aren't made sturdy enough any
more to use by themselves for long). With the angle of the sides of
the mortar tray, he can back his feet up to the edge and still pee
inside the box.
