My Bombay mix, Buddha (yes, he's the one with the cat acne) seems to
paw/scratch at the litter in his box obsessively.  It almost seems
like he's trying to clean his paws off!  This happens a few times a
week, usually at night, and it goes on for at least 2-5 minutes at a
time.  I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to why he does
this?  Is he a neat freak or is this "normal" for cats?  (PS, My other
cat, an American Tabby, does not exhibit this behavior.)

Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom!

Some cats just seem to love a litterscratchfest! Rosalie will do this too.
I don't remember my old cats doing it nearly as much. Sometimes in the
middle of the night I will feel like saying "enough already!" but she's so
sensitive I think it might scare her away from using the box completely, so
I just let her have her fun.

Hell, after having one cat who eliminated outside the box, every time
I hear mine scratching I say "GOOD GIRL!" Cheeks tends to overdo
it, I hear her claws catching the plastic tray!

Some cats do this. I have no idea why. Maybe it's just fun.
Jeffrey is a major digger. The girls don't do it overmuch.

On a semi-related note, Jeffrey is also the only one who attempts to bury the
food with air. *LOL*

oh yes.  Shaina goes on burying her poop for a very long time.  she
also claws on the sides of the litter box and thus shreds the plastic
liner.  i would come over and take her paw and make digging motions
with it in the sand, but she doesn't like that.  she is such a smart
animal,  yet she doesn't seem to grasp that walls are not the same a
sand!  sometimes, when i clean her litter box, she comes over and
starts digging and burring what i take out because i guess i am not
doing a very good job.  she also tries to bury her food and it looks
too funny! she smells to see if it's still there and goes, dutifully
digging for about 3 min.  again, can't grasp that floor and furniture
to cover poop.  i feel so bad for her that i suggested we pour sand in
a box and put her bowls there, so that she can bury her food.  it
wasn't met with  great enthusiasm from my boyfriend and our roommates.

Naah not fun, it's a failing natural behaviour. Quite possibly the box
is too small, or the litter may even be not to the cat's liking. The
behaviour's so built-in that the feedback from the paws (wood, not
soil!) seems to matter naught.

One o' mine does the failed covering all the time. The other very
rarely does, except for the occasions when he piles all the litter
into a 6-foot tall pyramid and is still not satisfied. He then starts
to chip away at the walls and floor, hoping that a 12-foot
construction including house parts will be sufficient to hide the
turds: 'Yeah! Nothing to see here. No turds at all! Just a freakin'
38-foot sand dune!'

We have two that do this. I think they somehow think they can hide the
food from the others. Once threw up once and another came over and
"air burried it"

I would think that would hurt their little mutilated paws. They must be fast
healers.

They are VERY fast healers. Indeed, all three are now completely
healed and 100%. However the prognosis for you is pretty bleak. I fear
both of your conditions, extreme bitchiness and pathological tunnel
vision, are terminal. You should get your affairs in order.

I wonder if it has any relation to the fact that Jeffrey is also the pig of
the bunch...
Do the ones who bury it in your household also try to hog it?
I have to stand there and let the girls eat when I feed the wet at night or
Jeffrey wolfs his and tries to steal theirs. He's not starving - they get dry
during the day and he could certainly live off the land for awhile.
My fattest cat and he tries to bury the food. I dunno. *grins*

Same here. Our Alpha Cat, Rocks, will eat his fill then pretend to
bury it, even though the two girls are waiting patiently for him to
finish. If he tolerates them eating with him, he won't do this, but
sometimes he'll growl them away and do it when he finishes.
Ironically, if one of the girls happens upon the food and no one is
around, they'll pretend to bury it, then eat.

Our little Dewey kitty does this also!! At least 5 minutes. And he doesn't
even use the litter box beforehand. We think it is one of his chores to tidy
up the litter box after each of his step-brothers (he's low cat on the totem
pole)

Oh boy, Tigger does it for ten minutes every morning about 4am.  It is
EXTREMELY loud, he seems to manage to force the litter box to bang something
terrible.  I lie in bed a curse quietly to myself, trying to get back to
sleep.  Around 10 - 15 minutes after he stops, Tango starts his hyper
"pounce all over the bed and attack anything that moves session" and my
hands always end up in a sorry state...

Needless to say, I am always wide awake two / three hours before my alram
clock :)
