I?m hoping that someone in this ng might have a clue for me.
My 7 year old Maine Coon has been lethargic, had her to vet
,
Blood tests ok, and thyroid boarderline.  Walks like old
lady.
Been tracking vitals, and constipation set in ?brought back
to vet.
Yes, she was blocked.  After irrigation (anesthetized), he
discovered
that 3 of her paws were badly infected, were raw and full of
pus.
He called me in and showed me, and started to clean them
out,
Some of her claws just fell out!  After further cleaning, an
antibiotic injection, and a pain shot, they returned her to
the caged area.
The vert said he had never experienced this  phoenomina in
25 years
of practice.  The vets he conferred with hadn?t either. He
was
going to check professional sites tonite to see if he can
figure out
any cause.  Thought/guessed it might be an auto immune
thing.

All I can come up with is that we had our carpets cleaned
(Chem-Dry) which we have had done before, but she was
acting poorly for a couple of weeks before that.

We will probly be picking her up tomorrow. I figure
On keeping her in an uncarpeted bathroom while we nurse her
back,
like pain pills and anti-biotic and some cleansing agent?
(she?s comfortable there, we?ve used it as her ?safe room?
before)

Any experience with anything similar?
Any wild guesses as what would cause something like this
?thing? with her paws???

Did you notice her licking/grooming her paws excessively? Maybe what started as
an allergy to the Chem-Dry stuff ended up badly infected. It just sounds
plausible to me, since three paws were affected.
Poor kitty. She must be suffering tremendously to have had a blockage and paws
infected so badly the claws were already falling out.

You may be right.  She was licking, probly a lot more than
usual,  and really pulling
on the tufts between her toes.  I'll mention that to the vet
when we talk this morning

The cat in question is a Maine Coon, yes? I have a Maine Coon who, in her
youth, frequently had peeling paw pads that looked awful but were not infected
and didn't seem to bother her. Her paws are always hot. Three Vets did not know
why the peeling. Anyway, it's stopped. I wonder if it's typical of the breed.
The cat is very healthy.

I'll watch for that.  This time, yes to infection, and nails
also.
Thanks

Humans with heart disease get something similar. The heart doesn't pump well
enough to oxegenate the far extremities. The toe and finger nails start to lift
off the bed. They can then fall off. If you're a cat and having to walk on your
claws, that could cause infection. It would also cause lethargy. Lethargy
causes kitty not to move around and then you get constipation. It's a long shot
and I'm not a vet but just a thought Poor kitty.

Tell them to do more shelter work - they'll see every disease known to
Catdom.  We had a few cats with pododermatitis/paronychia (when the nailbeds
are involved its called "paronychia") that drove us crazy.  After running
every test in the book we discovered that in one cat it was pemphigus
foliaceus - a particularly nasty autoimmune disease and in another cat, a
fungal infection - dermatophytosis (a/k/a ringworm).

Could be pemphigus foliaceus.

Does it look like this:

I'm not clear on what you mean by "acting poorly".  We her paws bothering
her?

It could also be a form of allergic contact dermatitis.  She could have
already had a subclinical condition - the cleaning chemicals could have
pushed her over her immune threshold.  IOW, it could be a combination of
allergens that by themselves don't produce an allergic reaction, but
combined, have a synergistic effect that overwhelms her immune system.

Remember, indoor allergens are in the house all year round,  but their
concentrations are low around the spring and summer because houses are more
open. Come the colder months,  people keep the windows and doors closed and
the concentrations of those allergens increase - perhaps to intolerable
levels.

Please let me know the diagnosis - if one is reached.

Good luck,

More like this, middle 2 claws dropped out on all 3 paws,
4th paw started to also same 2 toes.

not dry like this, also with pus.

In retrospect all symptoms could have been that her paws
hurt.
Hising, staying in corners, and under table, clumsy walk, as
mentioned above,
lethergy could have caused constipation...

I'll print  out and offer your observations to vet on
Wednesday,
he is very open and communicative.

She is home now.
Tests sent to 2 labs. We won't be discussing 'maybes' till
test results come back.

Lotza meds.2 antibiotics, Baytril  and Clavamox.
Pain pills, Torbutrol.
a 'soak' Nolvasan...lotza luck soaking her raw, hurting
paws...I'm trying.

Thanks for the input, Sylvia
