Hallo all!!
Since whatever this is it's going to kill me before it kills the cat, I
decided to wait until the only vet I trust returns from the holidays (next
week). But I'm curious, so... what do you think it is?
a) The cat (spayed, female, inside-only, exotic shorthair) is perfectly
lively, eats normally etc.
b) her hair is extraordinarily dull, compareded to other cats who live in
the same place & eat the same stuff. Not like a newly found stray, but
in-between.
c) something brownish and greasy keeps building around her back claws. We
already checked and it's not a yeast infection but it really looks like one.
d) The same thing, or something similar, builds up under her tail, in the
vaginal area. As for the other hole, there we have the perianal glands,
constantly working.
e) My cats have always eaten first-quality catfood, and we even tried those
fish-only/skin-problems foods... with no results. As I mentioned, the other
two cats are in perfect shape and have wonderful hair/skin conditions.
All these things work together so that:
- you can't pick the cat up without soiling your t-shirt with greasy brown
pawprints
- the same pawprints are all over the floor and since they are _very_ greasy
cleaning them is a huge, huge work, and it must be done everyday.
- after the cat sleeps on a piece of furniture, there is a greasy brownish
cat-print, made to look even filthier by the obvious layer of cat hair that
sticks to it.
- the stench (of the cat) is really terrible.
If you find this all disgusting, imagine that I live inside there, and also
that my whole house is white!!!!!!!!!
OK let's be serious. I adore my cat and I'd clean after her the rest of my
life. But this is absolutely not normal. It may not be painful but the cat
must certainly suffer for it, at least because she can't be picked up as
often as one would. And her feelings will be hurt by her new names
(smellycat, filthycat... it's not kind, oh no!).
I really hope the vet will help us, but in the meantime.... have you got any
idea?
Thanks!

I think it is imperative to see a vet as soon as possible. You can't rule
out yeast infection (or a fungus, which is what I suspect) at home simply by
visual examination. The greasy residue and the stench certainly are not
normal. You mentioned that your vet will return from holidays "next week."
Does that mean tomorrow (Monday, Aug. 25) or the following week. If s/he is
returning tomorrow, then that's reasonable. If it's the following week,
please seek out another vet before then for some interim care. Does your
vet have someone on call who covers during his/her absence? If so, your vet
probably has some confidence in the person who would take emergency calls.
Do you live in an area where other vets are readily available? There are
some referral services that can help.

Please update us on this situation. At the time you wrote, you said the
only vet you trust was on holidays, but he/she should have returned by now.
What was the diagnosis?
