It can be a stress response or allergies. He should have a check up to see
if he is stressing over an illness. He *may* have developed an allergy to
something in the food. That is often the case.

Also have him checked out for impacted anal glands. The discomfort
will sometimes make them start pulling out hair anywhere on the
upper hind legs or lower back. LeMieux pulled out a bald patch on
the front of his thigh when his glands were impacted.
