Our Maine Coon, Reagan, will be a year old early December. He has
never seen a Christmas tree before. He decimated our herb garden when
we brought it inside. He has a fondness for cilantro, by the way. We
are concerned how others have dealt with the tree situation. Any ideas
how to keep him from climbing the tree?I am also afraid he will eat
it. Besides the herbs that he ate, he goes crazy for fresh flowers,
which I now do not bring into the house. Times a-tickin', any ideas?

Ya never know. Try putting up the tree several days before when you
want to decorate it. See how he behaves. If he climbs it, put only
limited decorations on it. If he doesn't, try putting more on. In any
event, no glass or other breakable ornaments, and absolutely no tinsel!
Tinsel can kill a cat if ingested. Also, do not put any "stay fresh"
stuff in the tree water. It's poisonous, and cats often drink out of
tree holders. Apologies if you already know this.

I have a "closed" tree stand for this very reason. No water access. Maybe
I've just been lucky, but none of the cats have tried to climb the tree (pretty
dense branches after all - not a lot of space). OTOH, ornaments have made
their way off the tree and under the couch. Favorites were little paper mache
apples that rolled SO easily with little paws playing with them!
Nothing breakable (between dog tails and cat paws.......), and tinsel is tacky
anyway ;-D.
The biggest problem I have with cats at Christmas is with my nativity set.
It's olive wood, and the cats can't seem to resist it. Baby Jesus gets carried
off every once in awhile.

Yeah, the ones I've been getting are pretty thickly branched, too, but
when Caley and Benjamin were 5 month old kittens, C chased B across the
livingroom and ended up 2/3 of the way up the tree, much to her apparent
surprise. She perched there enjoying the view, and then I helped her down.
My cats (now adult) mostly enjoy sitting underneath and smelling the
piney smell, but this year I will have another 5 month old kitten on the
loose, and he's a helion, so I'm going to be playing things very much by ear.

Oh, my! Those sound irresistable. I have some ornaments that are
deliberately hung from the lower branches because they are suitable
playthings.

Yes, isn't it just! ;-)

What a great shot for a Christmas card! Just love those eyes, like "I'm

Is that a Jack Russell in the first picture? How does it coexist with
the cat?

That is a lovely mental image :-)

Wow, that must be quite a ride for Baby Jesus! No wonder there were no
cats in the nativity scene.
That is too funny. So you have to go looking for Baby Jesus in the cat
bed, or next to the litter box...

I don't have a tree any more since it's just me and the cats. When I
was a kid, we always had a cat. The tree was wired or tied to the walls
to prevent being knocked over. We did use tinsel however and don't
remember it ever being a problem.

Ohh, cilantro! Any harm to cats in cilantro? If not I'd like to try it
on Squeaky.

Get an artificial one.
If you don't already, why not think about growing some grass for him.

Be prepared to re-decorate the tree every morning. Just try to stabilize the
tree so he doesn't knock it over when he climbs it. Also, don't put any
preservatives in the tree water because he'll probably drink out of it. Don't
use tinsel. Don't use glass bulbs, especially toward the bottom of the tree.
You're in for a real trip!

In addition to all the other posters' good advice, I place my artificial
tree under an air vent and tie the tree to the vent so it wont fall no
matter what!

Some people suspend the tree from the ceiling.
Some other people don't bother with trees.
