Cats and computer monitors

Upon arriving home yesterday, I discovered that my 17" flat-panel monitor,
keyboard, and speakers had disappeared from my desk.  Looking closer, I
found them in a heap behind the desk.  The keyboard and speakers survived;
the monitor is no more.

I was really angry, mostly at myself for allowing this to happen.  I payed
US$488 for that monitor in June.  It was a dandy.  The computer is a room
that is open to most of the house: no door to close to keep you-know-who
away.

There are three possible perpetrators here.  Two are long-time residents.  I
don't think they did it.  My guess is it was six-month old Elmo, who is a
furry terror at times.  I yelled at Elmo.  He hid for a while.

I gave serious thought to packing him off to the nearest no-kill shelter
that very moment.  This remains the best protection against a replay of
this disaster, but I just can't do it.

For now, I am laying the (latest) flat-panel monitor face-down on the
desktop when I'm not using it.

Anybody else have a disaster like this?

Why would you get so angry that you would give serious thought to dumping
your cat into a shelter. It's only a computer monitor and the cat isn't
responsible if things get knocked over. You need to set the rules down early
and use a squirt bottle whenever you see any of the cats trying to knock
over the monitor.

Two of my cats are always on top of my monitor and are always walking all
over my desk but I would never think of sending them to a shelter for simply
knocking something over. That would be a cruelt thing to do as items can be
replaced.

I took that to be a "heat of anger" statement... I have been known to wail
"I can't AFFORD to have you RUIN EVERYTHING I OWN" plaintively... I know
that material possessions are not to be compared with living creatures, but
still I think some anger/upsetitude is natural/understandable.

Must be a strong bloody cat!!!

A shame about the monitor, but your contents insurance is designed for this
kind of incident.  Chill out and make a claim :).

Gary.

Only problem I've had - apart from the sitting on the keyboard or
mouse-mat while I'm still using them - was when one of the cats
knocked a newly-watered plant pot off the top book shelf and onto my
computer case. I'd just built the computer but was less than amused at
having a lovely plant badly damaged. (The plant recovered though.)

Ever since the top shelf has been the cat's chill-out spot. They can
survey their kingdomfrom there and look down at me and wonder what I
see in the constant tapping of the keys.

Another time I bought a rather neat, I thought, ceramic cat statue.
WHIFF walked into the room jumped up and proceeded to knock the thing
sideways and onto the floor where it shattered.

I took it that she was in a "thou shant have no other (cats) before
me" nor "worship their graven images" frame of mind ... should have
called her Moses.

Do you really think he had any clue why you were yelling?

why not arrange the furniture so the desk is against a wall?

Have to say, no - no disaster like this - and I bought my flat-panel when they
were at the top of the price scale (ouch - but my other monitor had died,
so.....).  I think the same one is less than 1/3 of the price now.

Madeline did hurl my "laptop" (an early IBM prototype that would crush
one's actual lap, but which could theoretically be lugged places, I
suppose) to the floor, breaking it in the process, but it didn't have much
actual value -- except that I couldn't afford a new one, so I was
computerless for a while.

Rosalie has pulled the speaker onto the floor, but I think it scared her so
much she'll probably never jump up there again.

Sorry about your computer -- it can be hard when a family member wrecks
something of yours! He'll probably never do it again...

I can sympathize.  My cats are *always* knocking stuff off my desk.  I can
barely work sometimes.  The speakers are on the floor half the time.  I
mounted my two flat-panel monitors to the wall.  You may want to try that.
Next house I get, I'm having an office with a door.

I understand why you were angry, but for future reference, he had no idea
what you were yelling about.

I'm sure it was a high speed accident. I keep an eye toward anything that
might be knocked over and broken in a high speed zoom rally. It just becomes
second nature and you know "ope. better not put that there." I know Elmo did
not MEAN to do it, as do you. I hope you pet him since he had no clue what
you were yelling at him about and probably wonders why you are mad.

Jeez, I'm glad to hear your cat's ok. That could have been a real disaster.
Your equipment is replacable, your cat is not. Sounds like you haven't
cat-proofed your house and you really need to with a cat that age around.

And I agree with the other posters... your cat wouldn't have a clue what you
were yelling about.

Just a guy and his cat - 03 Nov 2004 04:59 GMT
Youch. Never had anything like that take place with a cat. My
grandmother's elderly Jack Russell Terrior chewed not one but both of
her digital hearing aids ($3000) value. Luckily they were insured. Not
too sure what got into the dog, had never done anything like that
before.

Oops. Next time you could try attaching it to the desk with
industrial-strength velcro - some of that stuff can resist quite
remarkable forces.

Just another unpredictable human.

Velcro, man! Indeed, you could always velcro the cats to a wall, in
extremis.

> Anybody else have a disaster like this?

Not that bad. I have been a little worried that my cats might be able
to hoik my 'speakers off their stands. At $eeeeek, this would be Not
Good. Wouldn't be good for the cat, either, being brained by 30kg of
aluminium loudspeaker. Fortunately, semi-destructive testing suggests
that the weight is enough to keep everything sticky-side down.

Total damage for me has been limited to: several lamps, a few CD
cases, some scratches to a mouse (electronic flavour), scratches on
floor from totally sideways cat-overcooking-sharp-turn action, and
occasional shoulder scrapeage from ambitious cat dynos. Not bad,
really.

I have two suggestions. Can you buy or get a computer desk that has a
keyboard tray and one of those cardboard backings you nail to the
back? That's what I have for my desk and it's nearly impossible for
the cats to get at much (plus the back of the desk is close to the
wall, and they can't crawl behind it).

If that's not an option, can you put some sort of a cover over the
desk when you're gone--an old bedsheet, perhaps? I'd suggest plastic,
but if you have the machine on, it needs some air, so maybe that's not
a good idea.

Fortunatly I've never had a monitor broken but I did have a cat that as a
kitten got her kicks by knocking things down or over. She wouldn't even run
away after doing it.
