Silent ginger

A young ginger tom has moved into our house. It's a nice tame, clean
cat but we can't find out who it belongs to.

It is totally silent. It repeatedly opens it's mouth wide when it
wants to go out (or come in) and a cry should emerge but nothing is
heard.

What could be wrong with it?

Nothing horrible and contagious, I'd warrant. Perhaps an old injury. Perhaps
a genetic thing so he's mute. Perhaps he IS making a sound, just above your
hearing range. Perhaps he just never learned to meow. I had to teach Jeffrey.
Truly feral cats make lots of sounds, but they rarely meow.

Congrats on your new cat. *EG*

It is a master of the "silent meow". I think it's yours now. Many cats do
the silent meow as a tactic, but some just are silent meowers. I had one
like that once. Never heard a peep from him. Then my dad accidently closed
him in the trunk of a car where he kept his tools. We couldn't figure out
where he was and were calling and calling. He started yelling loud and we
found him. Other than that, never heard a meow in the 15 or so years he was
with us.

You will now have to read "The Silent Miaow" by Paul Gallico. It can be a
bit precious, as it is purportedly written by a cat, but it is really
very funny and sweet. My first cat, Nickleby, was a master of the silent
meow, it was heartbreakingly cute and would earn him anything his little
heart desired!

My Gnarly did this too. I heard no meow, just a little k-k-k, very soft.

The only meower in the house is Lucas, who was a stray.  My true ferals
can't scrape up a decent meow between the two of them.  Phoenix's meow is
a strangled croak, and Marie's is a barely audible squeak.  (This is
normal for ferals, btw - loud meowing, as Lucas manages quite easily, is
the mark of a cat born among humans.)

Wow! I thought about that book when I saw the title of the thread.  I'm
surprised anyone remembers it! Its an oldie but goodie and one of my
all-time favorites.  I still have my 1964 vintage!

"Take Over" was hilarious!

"After a week or so of living in the country off a most revolting diet of
grubs and insects, I determined to take over a family and become a house
cat....."

"I often discussed with friends the manner in which I attained success, and
since I am not affected with vanity, I was able to point out clearly the
extraordinary perception behind each move and the outstanding cleverness on
my part....."

"So impressed were they with my story that they begged me to write it
down...."   then the black & white pictures of a cat on a typewriter. LOL!

I highly recommend it - Too bad its been out of print for >20 years.

Thanks for reminding me - I'm gonna read it again!

We had a ginger stray (neighbour's cat) that used to visit. It lost it's
voice for a while, but we never knew why. It was quite loud, so perhaps they
had it silenced? It also had a fight with a Coon, so it might have been an
infection.

Our cat is also very quiet, rarely meows aloud. Usually just opens her mouth
and nothing comes out.

I have a big old ginger tom who adopted me but never makes a sound other
than a low crackling sound when he tries to meow. He's had chronic ear
problems and my vet thinks that may have affected his voice. I drop his ears
every month or so just to try to try to help keep things in check.

Perhaps nothing.  But I think it would be an excellent idea to have kitty
checked out by a vet just to be sure he's in good health.  Congrats on your new
furbaby :)
