Hi, all...
Our four year old male (Tomboy) swallowed something about thirty-six hours ago
that hasn't come out the other end yet. We are very worried that he might soon
be in trouble. The other night, my wife was trimming an 8-1/2 inch by 11 inch
picture that we had printed off our printer. She noticed the cat just standing
there staring at the trimming as it dangled and bounced about, so when she was
through cutting it, she threw it down (thinking that the cat wanted to play
with it). The next thing we knew, the trimming was gone and our boy was
standing there watching my wife trimming the next one!
Now we are really worried. We even put a trimming in a glass of water to see
what effect it had on it. Whether it would devolve or not. It hasn't.
The trimming was about 1/8 of an inch wide and about eight inches long, and
from a glossy piece of hp copy paper. The stuff is apparently coated with
plastic or something, because water doesn't seem to do anything to it. Tomboy
is still acting normal, and has had one successful bowl movement since he ate
it, and is eating well also. He doesn't act any different. He is just as happy
and as friendly as ever.
Does anyone here feel that we have anything to worry about? Will the trimming
just pass on through without cutting or getting entangled in his intestines?
Should we go to our vet now or should we wait until he is acting funny?
Please help...!

I would check with my vet, but I think stomach acid is a lot stronger than
plain water and it might have dissolved the paper.

A lot stronger. As long as kitty is eating and pooping and not throwing up,
it is probably fine. I would check with a vet just in case but look for not
eating, not pooping and throwing up. That would signal an emergency.

Your phone (to call vet) was out of order for 36 hours? How worried were you?

36 hours ago was still the weekend where I live - lots of vets are not open
on the weekend. Swallowing a piece of paper does not seem to warrant a
visit to the emergency room in my book. Gosh, are you people always this
unkind over here? Did I stumble onto alt.flame by mistake??

Don't worry about it. ;-)

Psst...there are many zealots in here. But, I will say that I'm sorry I
overreacted. :-)

And yet, since you have still not mastered the "leave a snippet of what you
are responding to" concept, nobody knows wtf you are talking about or who
you are talking to.

Actually, you know. It's apparent that you pour over these posting.

Honey. Clearly. :)

Well, I can be quite zealous when it comes to protecting cats, but the one
thing I've learned over the years (I'm older than dirt!!) is that if you
want to persuade someone about something you stand a better chance of doing
so if you're nice to that person, respectful of their feelings, and use
logic rather than vitriol. As soon as someone gets offended, hurt, or angry
they will immediately quit listening to what you have to say and usually
take the opposite side of your argument just for spite. If you really care
about a subject and want someone to side with you be logical, but polite,
and you'll usually win them over if your argument is valid.
Just MHO.

I've noticed that some cat people have claws. Thankfully, not all. ;)

There are a few here ... I recently blocked a Mary for instance... that will
flame at anything. Ignore them as they are less likely to read for
comprehension and things will be fine.
Good luck with the trimming. I think the cat should be fine as it was just
paper and you are doing the right thing by watching his movements but it
would likely not be discernable after it is digested.

On bad days, perhaps. But it usually takes an idiot like you to set me off.
HTH. HAND.

You see.... Most people aren't over-emotional KOOKS like you are. Photo paper
isn't going to kill in one day ... nor even two! You act like the people's kat
ate shards of glass.
Nut-case imbecile...

I'd at least call the vet & see what s/he says - whether to go for a vet
visit ASAP or to wait it out (literally!), because of the glossiness/coating
of the paper.

First of all, you have a vet, no? A phone call to the vet, please.
Second of all, stomach acid is stronger than water. Plain paper might be
less of a worry but the glossy I'd worry about.

Of course I don't look busy,
I did it right the first time.

As others have said, most likely ok. Did he definitely eat it? If he
wanted to bat it around a bit, it might just be under something.
Certainly in my house I'd have to look for quite some time to be sure
it was in him.
