Cat Food

There is a recurring theme in this newsgroup about what food to feed
one's cats. I am interested in this subject and would like to solicit
all opinions.

So far I've been feeding Squeaky Friskies. After about a month he tires
of the particular flavor I'm using. He acts hungry, and grabs at my leg
as if to say "feed me". Did anybody here see that cult classic "The
Little Shop of Horrors" with the carnivorous plant demanding "Feeeed
me!"? That's Squeaky. Also me when I get hungry.

I put the saucer on the floor, he runs to it, sniffs, turns his lips
down as if in distaste, and walks off. So, I switch flavors. I think he
would really like something else, but he is picky, sometimes deigning to
try a small piece of cooked chicken or poached catfish, and sometimes
not. But I can rely on him going back to the Friskies.

Anyhow, I feel that the food should be nutritious for the cat, not
necessarily for me. So far as I know, Friskies is. I don't see what's
wrong with offal if it satisfies the cat's nutritional needs. But I'm
open to all opinions.

Please let me throw the floor open to discussion. I understand there are
strong feelings and that's fine by me.

My vet likens Friskies to "junk food" and I have to agree.  Tends to have a lot
of by products instead of real food.

My cats eat a combination of 4 different mixed dry foods -  Nutro MaxCat
Regular, Hairball, Senior and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul.

Hi Dick,

Although cats often enjoy dry food, and it's convenient, canned food offers
more appeal for most, as well as moisture.  Cats don't drink much water
naturally, so canned food fills that need.  I don't know if you're feeding
canned or dry right now, but there are so many better foods available than
Friskies.  here's one interesting site, but there are others that others may
have links to:

http://webpages.charter.net/katkarma/canfood.htm

My cats get a variety of foods, but most often, Trader Joe's seafood or chicken
varieties.  They aren't big on beef.  They do split a small can of Fancy Feast
at bedtime as their nighttime indulgence! ;-D

I give a lot of premium brands on a rotating basis, and as long as it's "pate"
style, they like it all.  Chunks and you can forget it.....

Hi Dave,

I've been thinking about this recently myself too. I fed my cat Friskies for
years when I first got her. She loved it and I overfed her and by age 10,
she was overweight. Not the food's fault, but it didn't help that the food
wasn't the best.

More recently, after an aborted attempt to switch to raw/homemade cat food,
I went with wet food for about eight months (Iams) which they liked okay. I
was trying to rule out food allergies for one of my cats, so I didn't even
switch flavor. They (I have three cats now) got tired of it eventually, so I
switched again to a high-quality dry food called Felidae.

They loved it. They loved the crunchiness of it. But much to my surprise,
one day the store was out of Felidae and I had to bring home something, so I
got a Royal Canin brand called "Nature Sense"? Yellow bag. Anyway, they LOVE
the taste of it 10x more than the Felidae, and would not go back to anything
else. (Admittedly, I didn't try too hard to switch them back since Nature
Sense is a dollar cheaper per bag.) Anyway, it is also high-quality and they
love it.

The occasionally get wet food when I am going to be home during the day, but
more often it is measured dry food. They drink more water than when they
were on wet but I think they are still healthy.

Anyway, thanks for letting me reminesce :-). I highly recommend a
good-quality food that you can't find at a supermarket (that seems to be one
of the qualifications). There are a lot of good foods out there, so find
something Squeeky likes.

I am usually in the minority but I have no problem with Friskies or the
store bought brands. I ended up switching to Walmart's Special Kitty brand
which they really like and is a bit cheaper. I have 3 cats so it works for
me.

The trouble with the commercial, cheaper brands is that most of the times
there is dye in the food - not good for light carpets if they throw-up.  I
have had my whole house carpet ruined because of this.  Another think - is
there is more cereal and less protein in the cheaper brands - not
necessarily good for cat nutrition.

Cats throw up when they get hairballs so I just use a carpet cleaner to get
rid of the spot. I have had no problems with the store bought brands.

Well, it storebought food ruined my carpet.  When I switched to prescription
food, never had the problem again.  And I did use a carpet cleaner by the
way.....

I tried the so-called premium foods and my cats won't even touch it.

I've never known a cat who began its life on grocery store quality food
who would eat premium food later in life.  This is why I didn't start
on stuff like Friskies when my cats were kittens....

Well, I switched Oscar from Purina (which caused unpleasant litterbox
results), to umm Alliance?, to Nutro, all of those dry, and now she's on
Wellness canned.  She won't eat most human food, but she seems to be fine with
whatever cat food I give her.  She doesn't love any of it, but she'll eat it.
