New Cat Food

I bought a new kind of canned food the other day.  The brand name is Merrick
and it is suppose to be all natural, no by-products, etc.  The label says
that the 5.5 oz can contains 992 kcal/kg and that it provides 156 kcal of
metabolizable energy, calculated value.  Does this sound like a lot of
calories for a 1 year old fairly active cat (if I fed him one 5.5 oz. can a
day)?  Does anyone know anything about this food?

TIA

Look on the side of the can and see where it's produced, would you? There's a
dog food plant here, a rinky-dink little place, but that's the name of it. This
*has* to be a coincidence. It can't be a product of *that* place.

Can says the company is in Hereford, TX.  They also have a
website....merrickpetcare.com.

Yup, that's it. Apparently they have 2 canneries, one here and one in hereford.
Eek. I think I'd do some serious research about the quality of the food. But it
could be they don't even produce the cat food here, but produce it at their
other plant. I honestly thought it was strictly a dog food plant.

This food is carried by the store where I buy Wellness. I tried a few
cans as the ingredients sound pretty good, but my cats did not care for
it. What was more concerning to me was the fact that when I called the
company, I could not get any nutrtional information from them WRT
calcium/phosphorus content, etc. and even after repeated emails still no
luck. Based on this, I won't try any other flavors and will not feed
this food at all.

I feed this food to my cats as a small proportion of their diet
(~10%). It smells good, and they love it. Hadn't got round to getting
hold of the nutritional info though, and this...

...does not sound promising. (I stopped feeding Petguard and Pinnacle
because they too would not release such info).

Hm, I shall cogitate...

Can't help you with the food, Sue, but as far as the kcals - figure 45
kcal/kg of body weight for a neutered adult.  You can adjust this upwards
depending on his activity level.

A good pediatric scale would help you fine tune his caloric intake for
optimum weight.

Good luck.
