One Sister (Cat) Suddenly Hates the Other

I tried to post this last night through Google Groups but something
happened. Please forgive me if it's a double post.

One of my cats is suddenly hissing and growling whenever she is in
close proximity to her sister. She even sometimes runs at her and
gives her a swat, though there has never been a serious fight. The
victim of the attacks is always sweet and generally has started to
make an effort to stay out of the way of the other.

Recent changes that could be playing a role in this are thus: I moved
to a new house in August and now, instead of having access to only a
balcony, my cats spend hours outside roaming more freely. The agressor
in the situation just noted is the bigger wanderer. She has become
more bold than her sibling.

Both cats are spayed and have all their shots.

Please help me patch up this feline relationship!

Thanks.

Maybe you should try some Feliway. I would also think maybe a vet check is
in order.

Rescue Remedy may help in this situation. I do think that the OP should wait
this out though. It is not unusual for even sibling cats to fight for
dominance.

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't know what you mean by Feliway,
Rescue Remedy or OP. I can look these up on the internet, but insight
from you folks would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Feliway = calming pheromones you can buy
Rescue Remedy = homeopathic "calm down" treatment you can also buy
OP = Original Poster, i.e. the one who started the thread.

That should read
Feliway = calming pheromones you can buy
Rescue Remedy = magical water in a bottle that you can buy

Rescue Remedy is supposed to calm down a nervous or stressed out cat. OP=
Original Poster which is you.

Hi Shrubman ,
It might be that now your cats are allowed out that they are mixing
with strange cats and picking up strange scents causing one cat to be
hostile to the other. The cat that is being hostile might have been
attacked by another cat and could be redirecting her agression onto
her sister.
As has already been mentioned, you can use feliway plug in, more info
here  http://www.parkvets.com/microsite/flutdfeliway.html
If you are in Europe you can also try Felifriend which you can spray
directly onto the cats. I don't know if it's a vailable in Northern
America.
It might help if you can keep the cats closer to home by limiting
their time out, especially at night and by feeding several times a day
if you can .

There was a traumatic experience last week which I didn't mention
because the cat had started to exhibit this behaviour beforehand. I
took both cats to the vet and besides the usual anxiety involved with
travleing in the car and visiting a strange place, one of the
procedures that was particularly upsetting to the now agressive cat
was an attempt to collect a fecal sample with a looped stick (don't
know the term). Anyway, it failed in a miserable fashion and by the
time the vet was trying to restrain her for her shots she was freaking
out and ready to take on all comers. During that time, her sister was
roaming free in the room and I remember her getting near the now
agressive cat during the procedure adding to the freak-out. I can
easily attribute her recent ill-will to that, but like I said it can't
totally explain it because she had already learned how to hiss and
growl and was starting to do it before the vet day.

I hope I can get her straightened out. When it is just her and me
interacting she is very docile.
