I recently adopted a 2 year old cat from the SPCA which is the first
cat i've ever had. I've been giving him a teaspoon of catnip daily,
and rubbing it on his scratching post. This morning when I woke up
George had some how gotten the half ounce bag out of the cupboard,
broke it open and spread it all over the carpet. When I discovered him
he was laying right in the mess, catnip all over him and the carpet.
He seems okay right now, is this something I'd want to call the vet on
due to the amount he could have ingested or am i just over reacting?
Any help would be appreciated.

I've never heard of catnip being harmful to cats in any amount (it doesn't
really get them high, it just smells similar to a sexually aroused cat,
FWIU), but if you're worried, call.
Better safe than sorry. I've taken my kids in and had it turn out to be
nothing. The money spent more than made up for my peace of mind.

Don't worry, cats don't OD on catnip.  They will have a reaction to it for a
while - which may vary from cat to cat: get very mellow & blisss out, to
acting super-crazy.  But it's self-limiting, w/no after-effects.

LOL!! This happened with my cat Pearl one day. I came home and she had this
...stuff....all over her and I thought what in the world! She had pulled a
bad of nip out of a drawer and was absolutely COVERED in it. She was very
happy. I don't believe it will hurt them at all.

Thanks for the information folks. No harm done at all. Had a pretty
happy cat this morning.
