I can't tell you about wheat seeds but oat seeds will keep a long time.
I bought a 50 pound bag and keep them in a plastic container in the
basement which stays about 65 degrees. I use a pot about 6 inches deep.
I put 4 or 5 inches of lawn soil (NOT potting soil) in the pot, then add
about 5 ounces of water. Then I sprinkle a liberal amount of seeds on
top followed by enough soil to cover the seeds. This is followed by
spraying water on top. I place the pot on a window sill and twice a day
I spray more water and rotate the pot 90 degrees. When the grass
reaches a height of 6 inches I put it down for the cats. This takes
about a week.

Thanks Mike. I bought 4 clay pots and have a couple pots of grass that I
bought to see if he would like it, and figured to leave each pot in for the
kitty, for say, 24 hrs. then rotate to another pot leaving each pot to grow
and recoup for about 4-6 days.

You wait until it's 6 inches? Mine starting chomping on it at about 1.5
inches.

What is the problem with potting soil? Is this just your preference, or is
there some other significance?

I had very poor luck with potting soil. The grass wouldn't grow
properly. Miracle Grow worked well but is expensive. Lawn soil is
formulated to grow grass and does an excellent job. At $4.00 for a 40
pound bag it is cheap also.
